Alton Wright

Alton Wright, 80, died December 23, 2002 at his residence. The son of Ernest and Mary Sue Wall Wright, he was born December 22, 1922 in Topton, Cherokee County, NC.
Mr. Wright attended high school at Asheville Farm School (now Warren Wilson College) and then went to Pfeiffer Junior College. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942, where he served as a corporal until 1945. Mr. Wright landed in three beach campaigns in the South Pacific, including Iwo Jima.
After his discharge from the Marines, Mr. Wright resumed his college education, graduating from Elon College. He later received an M.B.A. from UNC at Greensboro. Mr. Wright worked as a store manager for Western Auto Stores, taught high school distributive education and then worked for 25 years as Human Resources Director for Belk Stores Services in Charlotte until his retirement in 1989.
Mr. Wright was a member of Dilworth United Methodist Church from 1966 until his death. He taught Sunday school for many years and served in other leadership roles. Mr. Wright also assisted with various county educational services and organizations. He had the distinct honor of serving on The Board of Trustees of Warren Wilson College.
A funeral service will be held Friday, December 27, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. in the Terry Chapel of Dilworth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Duke Ison officiating. Graveside committal will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Dockery Family Cemetery in Dobson, NC. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel, 1111 East Boulevard.
Mr. Wright is survived by his wife of 53 years Josephine Dockery Wright; two daughters, Sue Wright and her husband Steve Farrington, of Philadelphia, PA and Jean Veilleux and her husband Jim, of Charlotte; a son, Charles Wright and his wife, Lisa, of Charlotte and four grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Warren Wilson College, P.O. Box 9000, Asheville, NC, 28815-9000 or to Dilworth United Methodist Church, 605 East Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203.

Shirley Sue Stowe
April 23, 1937 — January 1, 2016
Shirley Sue Stowe, age 79 of Topton, passed away Friday, January 1, 2016 at the Graham Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. Shirley was born April 23, 1937 in Topton, NC to the late Jones Stowe and the late Alberta Conley Stowe. A member of Red Marble Baptist Church, she was preceded in death by brothers, Bobbie Brank, Frank Stowe, and Kenny Anderson.

Survivors include three sisters, Sandra Gilbert, Brenda Waldroup, and Pat and her husband Larry Perkins and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday January 2, 2016 at 2:00 pm at the Red Marble Baptist Church with the Rev. Mickey Stewart officiating. Music provided by the church choir. Interment will follow in the Red Marble Cemetery. Pallbearers include Timothy Michael, Jacob Michael, Jarid Anderson, Eddie Waldroup, Chris Waldroup and Jack Postell.

The family will receive friends at the Red Marble Baptist Church from 1-2 pm on Saturday before the service.

Kenneth Harvey Grant
Kenneth Harvey Grant, 69, of Andrews, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at Murphy Medical Center in Murphy.
He was a native of Swain County and a lifetime resident of Western North Carolina. He was the son of the late Thomas and Nannie Lee Grant.
He was a residential house painter. He enjoyed trout fishing, had an outgoing nature, and was a great story teller. He liked to pick his guitar and appreciated southern gospel music. He was a member of Rowland's Creek Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by an infant sister Velma Jean Grant and a sister, Ella Mae Gregory.
He is survived by two sons Chuck Grant and wife Deborah of Nantahala, and Scott Grant of Murphy; three daughters Natalie Grant of Nantahala, Karen Grant Wilson of Ball Ground, Ga., and Becky Grant Morrow of Murphy; a sister, Betty Sue Fennell of Purlear; four grandchildren; special friend Ruth Lambert of Nantahala, and best friend Boyce Griggs of Andrews.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 19, at Townson Rose Chapel in Andrews. Pastor George Simmons and the Rev. Harry Hawk officiated. Pallbearers were Boyce Griggs, Johnny Yonce, Jeff Dockery, Paul Bryant and Gene Messer. Honorary pallbearers were Jack Ledford, Rooster Carter and David Earl Gregory. Interment was at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 20, at Valleytown Cemetery in Andrews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Kenneth H. Grant to the American Cancer Society. P.O. Box 1151, Murphy, NC 28906.

Of the sons, John M. Bryant was the oldest ; he died some years ago, at the age of eightythree; he married a Miss Drew, below Marion, and raised a large family-sons, Eli, Solomon, David, Pinckney and Hugh Bryant ; and daughters, Mrs. David Johnson, Mrs. Hardy Johnson and Mrs. Addison Lane. Eli Bryant went West. Solomon Bryant married a daughter of Rev. David Edwards, first, and then a Miss McDonald. I do not know who David married; he has a son, named Curtis Bryant. Pinckney Bryant married, had a large family and is dead ; I don't know who his wife was. Hugh Bryant married a daughter of the late Rev. David Edwards, and has a family; these are now our fellow- citizens, and are contributing their share towards populating and improving the conditions of the county. John M.
