From: "Billy Higgins" - Both Martin Turner and James Turner are listed in the 1830 Arkansas census for Izard County (in 1830, Izard County contained the lands of the future Marion County, Arkansas which was created in 1836) as "free colored". U. S. Army records list Marion, South Carolina as place of birth for both men. Martin was 29 years old when he was discharged at Fort Smith on August 28, 1819. That would make him born in 1789 or 1790. He is described as being five feet nine inches tall with dark eyes, dark hair, and dark complexion. Race is not mentioned on the document. James was honorably discharged as well on the same date. He was twenty-three making the year of his birth in 1795 or 1796. He was five feet ten inches tall with dark eyes, dark hair and dark complexion;

!NOTES from martygrant.com
I (Marty Grant) don't know how (or if) I'm related to the David W. Barnes family. I am very interested in him though.

David W. Barnes was born ca 1780/90, whereabouts unknown, possibly in SC.

David was not listed on the 1810 census in Marion Dist, SC.

David Barnes was not listed on the 1811 nor the 1814 tax list in Marion Dist, SC.

On 5 Apr 1813 D.W. Barnes witnessed a Administration Bond for Elizabeth Lee to be administrator for Thomas Lee, deceased. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 453 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

On 2 Apr 1814, David W. Barnes witnessed a deed between John Finkley (Finklea) to Stephen Foxworth for land on Gum Swamp. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book F page 447 from Marion County Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823 abstracted from the Deed Books by Lucille Utley, Edited, Indexed and Published by Alita White Sutcluffe).

In 1817 (ca 2 June 1817) David Barnes was one of the appraisors of the estate of Richard Fore. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 263 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

On 15 Dec 1817, David Barnes (and also Thomas Barnes, James Barnes Sr and James Barnes) were purchasers at the estate sale of Niel Hughes. (Marion County Probate Records Volume I, # 372 by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, Indexed by Ferrell and Nancy Prosser, 1985).

David Barnes was not listed on the 1820 census in Marion Dist, SC.

On 15 Nov 1821 David Barnes witnessed a deed between Lewis Maires and David Perritt. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book K page 90).

On 30 Dec 1822 James Campbell sold 57 acres to David Barnes, land below Maiden Down Bay and South East Branch. James Campbell was married to Mary Barnes, and for this reason I've suspected that David could be Mary's brother. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book O page 263).

David Barnes was listed on the 1824 Marion tax list and charged with 4 cents tax.

David was listed on the 1830 census. Unfortunately, this census was alphabetical, so we can't tell where he lived, nor who his neighbors were, but he was probably in the Maiden Down Bay area near the Campbells and the other Barnes families.

!CENSUS:1830 Marion District, SC pg 6 David Barnes 0200001000000-0001010000000
Analysis:
1 Male(s) 40-49 (1780-1790) David BARNES (1780/90)
2 Male(s) 5-9 (1820-1825) Son? (1820/25)
Son? (1820/25)
1 Female(s) 30-39 (1790-1800) Wife? (1790/1800)
1 Female(s) 15-19 (1810-1815) Daughter? (1810/15)

I didn't find any record for David Barnes after 1830, so he probably died around then, or else moved away. A David Barnes was listed on the 1840 and 1850 census in neighboring Darlington District, SC, but that appears to be a younger man of the same name.
Children

David Barnes and his wife apparently had at least three children per the 1830 census.

!EQUITY: 9 Jul 1831 Marion County Equity rolls (Marion County South Carolina Extracts from Equity Rolls by Lucille Utley) in Roll # 45 a case is found naming numerous heirs (this is from Ms. Utley's extract, the notes given are hers):
John Smith and others vs. Archibald Cox, adm of Amos Turner. Filed 9 Jul 1831. John Smith and Franceis Smith his wife, Penny Turner, Thomas Turner, John Turner, Elizabeth Jane Turner, Benjamin W. Turner, Thomas Evant and Mary Evant his wife. Note: Mary had married first Benjamin Exum. Bill for account. Amos Turner died 1813 leaving considerable estate and heirs at law; Francis Turner, Penny Turner, Thomas Turner, John Turner, Elizabeth Jane Turner, Benjamin W. Turner, Mary Turner and Charlotte Turner, children of Amos Turner. Francis Turner has married John Smith; Mary Turner has married Thomas Evant (note: probably Avant). Separate answer of Archibald Cox shows that James Turner one of the children of intestate died intestate since since the death of Amos Turner and two of the complainants John Turner and Thomas Turner left the country about 10 years ago. 11 Oct 1823. Philip Bartel under oath 10 Feby 1832 states that he was present at sale of estate of Amos Turner and saw Benjamin Axum "who had married Mary Turner now Mary Avant one of the complainants soon after he had purchased a gun for $20.00... ."
