76505 !NOTES:I am of the *opinion* that Amanda E. West (1877) is a child of James E. West & Nancy Talitha Hogland. I can't prove the connection however. Consider the facts:

1. Amanda is a West as proven by her marriage record and the death certificates of three of her four children (the fourth died before D/C's were required).

2. Amanda is buried at Panther Creek Cemetery as are James & Nancy West, all the Wests in that cemetery are part of their family.

3. If Amanda's birth date is correct (22 Mar 1877 per T/S), then she should be listed on the 1880 census. James and Nancy are in Buncombe Co,. NC in 1880 but everyone in the house is listed by initial only. There is an E. M. age 3 who could be her. Amanda's middle initial is "E" (per marriage record) and "M" could be for "Mandy" a common nickmane for Amanda.

4. None of the above totally proves the connection, but I think it is sound.

76508 !NOTES:I believe James F. Y. Grant was either a son or nephew of James Grant and Elizabeth Powell of Rockingham and Macon Counties, NC. No direct proof, but he was associated with James Robinson (1805-1843) whose widow married James K. Gray in 1845. Gray of course was widowed from Frances W. Grant, daughter of James & Elizabeth. That suggests J. F. Grant was part of that family in some way.;


!NOTES:Was Deputy Clerk in Macon Co, NC Registers office in 1838, suggesting he was at least 21 then, so born ca 1817 or earlier.

Appeared in Macon County, North Carolina Deeds 1838-1843 as deputy clerk in 1838, and as witness to several deeds, 1839, 1840, 1841 and 1842. His last entry was where he proved an 1841 deed in June 1843 court.

He is listed as "J. F. Grant" on most of the above, though in some cases he is listed as "J. Y. Grant". At first I thought they were two different people, but one deed dated 28 Feb 1842 lists him as J Y. Grant in the witness signature area, but as J. F. Grant in the registration area of the same deed. Another deed that same date lists him as J. Y. Grant in witness area, and as "Jas T. Grant" in registration area. The "T" could be an "F" or a badly written "Y".;

76510 !NOTES:I checked the probates, equity and deed records hoping to determine who the parents of Mary, Chloe, John, and Jane were, but I came up with nothing.
A Robert Rogers and a Samuel Rogers are strong possibilities for the father. They had children in the right age brackets in 1810, and I've found nothing else (yet) identifying those children;

!NOTES:"A History of Marion County, South Carolina", W. W. Sellers, 1902. pp 480-483 covers the Lewis family. An extract:
"Lewis.-This family were from Ireland, and settled in Virginia. A son of this family, named William, came to South Carolina before the Revolution; he married Miss Mourning Vampelt, a Hollander. Tradition informs us that her father and she came from Holland together, leaving his family in Holland; they came, as it seems, prospecting, and got down into South Carolina, where they met up with William Lewis, and soon an attachment (mutual) sprang up between the two young people, and they got married; whereupon old man Vampelt went back to Holland for his family, and was never afterwards heard of. William Lewis settled in Horry County ; they had and raised seven sons and two daughters ; the sons were William, James, Isaac, Hardy, Joel, Jonathan and Patrick; the girls were Polly and Zilpha. Of these, Polly married Averitt Nichols, of Columbus County, N. C, and was the mother of the late venerable Averitt Nichols, of Nichols, S. C. The other daughter, Zilpha, married William Gerald, of Horry. Of the sons, Hardy, Joel and Jonathan settled in Marion County Hardy on Little Pee Dee, below Gilchrist's Bridge, Joel and Jonathan higher up the river, on the south side, near where Miller's Church now stands ; and James at Allen's Bridge."
