78604 !NOTES:Martha Ellen Price married some Turner between 1870 and ca 1877. The D/C of her son Enos lists him as "Jim Turner"

Ellen Turner was listed as Single in 1880, but as her maiden name is Price, yet she was listed as a Turner here and all subsequent records she must have been married at some point. Perhaps she got divorced but kept her married name? She was S(ingle) in 1900, but W(idowed) in 1910 and 1920. Perhaps she and Jim Turner never divorced, or perhaps never married in the first place (common law marriage?).

She was living with William Finklea in 1880. He named her and all her children in his 1881 Will, but stated no relationship. He himself never married. He *could* be the father of her children, but that's far from proven;


There were several James Turners in Marion who could be Ellen's "Jim" assuming that was actually the name we should be looking for. The one record I have giving that name is the death certificate of Enos Turner. The same record lists Enos's mother as Ellen Calder, when it should say Price. Thus, perhaps none of it is reliable; 		Turner, James (I60973)

!NOTES:Once upon a time, researchers associated Col. John George of Isle of Wight Co., VA with Humphrey(ies) Cole of Essex, England, for Mr. Cole named John George, Yeoman of Writtle, as a son-in-law in his Will. People concluded that our John's wife Jane, was Jane Cole. However, Mr. Cole didn't list his daughter's name in the Will. Furthermore, Mr. Cole's son William Cole was in Isle of Wight with Col. John George.
- Further research has proven that John George of Writtle (Essex) is not Col. John George of VA, and that man's wife was not named Jane.
- Based on that, we have no paper trail associating our Col. John George with any specific section of England, so all references to him being of Essex are probably wrong as they were based on the Cole connection which has now been disproven.

- 2020 - Thanks to DNA testing, we have a strong George match who isn't a descendant of Col. John George. This man's George ancestors were in Northamptonshire, England as far back as 1700. That's about 100 years after our John was born, but the DNA evidence proves they are related. Does this mean our John was from Northamptonshire? It's a strong possibility that deserves more study.;

Thomas Cox and His Descendants
This Is an old. old name, and an old, old family, going back for its origin to a period so remote that the great Celtic race had not yet divided itself into its two distinct branches, of Erse and Cymry. So it Is that we find Cox used as a name among both the British and the Irish, and, as well, among the people of Brittany. in France; for it descends to all from the old Celtic root-word, "coch", meaning red. It thus carries with it no implication of blood relationship nor of national origin, although it does show the primitive—or root-stock of all its bearers to have been Celtic.

As red hair was too frequent among the early Celts to have served as a distinguishing and name-giving characteristic, and as red noses had not yet become fashionable, it Is probable that it was first applied, as in the case of King William Rufus, of England, to individuals notable for floridness of complexion,

The use of distinguishing family names (or surnames) among the British, although In occasional use among the Tribes from a time when the memory of man runneth not to the contrary, did not begin to become at all customary until the time of Edward the Confessor, and was in infrequent use even at the time of the compiling of Domesday Book, some half a century later.

Yet, in that venerable tome is found the name we are now considering, in the person of Aluun Coc, bedellus; and, again, as "Cocus", in Rot. Obl. et Fin, of the time of King John. The word "bedellus", used above as an official designation is not a Latin word, but the Latinized form of the British "beadle", or bedle, and Indicates an inferior officer of one of the courts, or an officer of the Parish.

Cornwall seems to have been the chief seat of the Coxes in England.

There were several contemporary families of Coxes early settled in the Jersies, but we are here concerned with but one of these, that of Thomas Cox, one of the first settlers at Middletown, who was the founder of the fine old family that later became centered in Upper Freehold.

THOMAS COX (1), concerning whose antecedents the present writer has no information beyond the fact that he was born in Hertfordshire, one of the western counties of England, and, after coming to this country, settled first on Newton Creek, Long Island. From that place he removed to Middletown, New Jersey, where he was among the earliest settlers and where he died in 1681. Before coming to Monmouth County he had married, on the 24th of April (or of June), 1665, Elizabeth Blashford, of whom we have no information except her name. On the death of Thomas Cox, she married secondly, Sept. 9, 1591, Thomas Ingham, or Ingram, who died in 1690.

To Thomas Cox was assigned, in 1687, Lot No. 8, in Middletown village. He subsequently acquired other properties. From early records he would seem to have taken an active part in all the movements of his day and to have stood well In the estimation of the people with whom he had cast his lot. He was a Baptist.

Some have thought that Thomas Cox had a brother who settled in the lower portion of the State, but the writer has met with no confirmation of this assumption.

Thomas and Elizabeth (Blashford) Cox had six children living at the time of his death in 1881, two of whom were of very tender years. They were: an unnamed eon (2); Thomas (3); John (4); James (5); Joseph (6), and an unnamed daughter (7), who married Nathaniel Robins (son of Daniel, of Cross-wicks), and died before 1714, leaving two daughters, Sarah and Meribah Robins. -there is more-

!OBITUARY:Funeral services for David R. George, Sr. of Conroe were held on Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at 12:30 p.m. in Cashner Colonial Chapel. Visitation was held prior to the service from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Cashner Funeral Home. Interment will be at a later date in Mountain Creek Cemetery, Robbinsville, North Carolina. Mr. George was born September 22, 1950 in Robbinsville, North Carolina and passed away on June 16, 2007 in Conroe, Texas. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force. David was employed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission as an investigator. He was a member of the Friends of the Library. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen George of Conroe; daughter, Aubry Menard and husband Michael of Conroe; son, David George Jr. of Conroe; mother and stepfather, Margie and Paul Brank of Barnardsville, North Carolina; brothers, Charles George and wife Theresa of Robbinsville, North Carolina, Donald George and wife Debbie of Franklin, North Carolina, and Frank, Bryan, Kenneth and Darrel Brank of Barnardsville, North Carolina; sister, Carla Long and husband David of Robbinsville, North Carolina. Numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive.

David Ray George, 56, of Conroe, Texas, formerly of Robbinsville, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2007 after a short illness.
He was a native of Graham County and the son of the late C.N. George and Margie Grant George Brank and Paul Brank, both of Buncombe County.
In addition to his mother and step-father, he is survived by his wife, Kathleen George; son, David Ray George Jr.; daughter, Aubry Michelle George Menard and husband Micheal, all of Texas; brothers, Charles George and wife Theresa, of Robbinsville, Donald George and wife Debbie, of Franklin; sister, Carla Long and husband David, of Robbinsville; step-brothers, Frank Brank, Darrell Brank, Kenneth Brank, and Brian Brank, all of Buncombe County; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held June 21 at the Mountain Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Loy Kennedy and Tom Buchanan will officiate. Burial will be in the Mountain Creek Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1 - 2 p.m. Thursday at the church prior to the service.

James Charles George, 70, of Robbinsville, NC passed away, Sunday, November 6, 2022, at John C. Keever Solace Center in Asheville, NC.

He was a native of Graham County and the son of the late C. N. George and Margie Grant George Brank. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Jessica Leigh George and his brother, David George.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa Davis George; daughters and sons-in-law, Rachel and Keith Payne of Bryson City, NC, Ann and David Stephens of Weaverville, NC; brother, Donald George (Debbie) of Franklin, NC; sister, Carla Long (David) of Robbinsville, NC; 6 grandchildren, Jamie, Anna, Ben, Jacob, Sam, Savannah, and 2 great grandchildren, J.D., and Miles, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, November 11, 2022, at the Townson-Smith Chapel. The Family will receive friends from 12:00 till 2:00 pm at the Chapel prior to the service. Private Graveside will be held later at Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

He is survived by wife, Lynda Pankey Phillips of the home; three sons, Todd and wife, Teresa Phillips, of Kensett, James and wife, Sher Atwell, of Conroe, Texas, and Jacob and wife, Julie Phillips, of Conroe, Texas; three daughters, Amanda Phillips of Conroe, Texas, and Carrie and Caroline Phillips both of Robbinsville, N.C.; two sisters, Linda Campbell of Hywassee, N.C., and Brenda Presley of Andrews, N.C.; step-son, Steve and wife, Andrea Pankey, of Bradford; seven grandchildren, Matthew, P.J., Jenna, Celia, Andrew Phillips, Shelby Atwell and Alesha Pankey.

He was preceded in death by son, Matthew Phillips, and his parents.

Brenda Phillips Pressley, 72 of the Dick Branch Community in Robbinsville, N.C., went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020.

A native of Graham County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Vonna Grant Phillips. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Max Phillips.

She was retired from Graham County Schools, where she worked as an Administrative Assistant for 25 years.

Brenda’s natural beauty was not only apparent in her appearance, but in her heart; her sweet disposition will be remembered by all her family and friends.

Brenda is survived by her husband of 43 years, Lloyd Pressley; her children and their spouses, Myra and Lonnie Waldroup of Robbinsville, N.C., Amber and Bill Watkins of Independence, Va., John and Megan Pressley of Tyron, N.C., and Paige and Brandon Jones of Robbinsville, N.C.; her sister, Linda Phillips Campbell of Hiwassee Dam, N.C., and her Aunt, Bobbie Sawyer of Kennesaw, Ga. Her grandchildren are Ashley, Eli, Maggie, Conor, Michael, Cooper, Amelia, Roman, Tucker and Emily. She has four great grandchildren, Zechariah, Gracie, Jakob, and Kennley.
