Lawrence Stewart

Lawrence Hoyle Stewart, 85, passed away at Renown Hospital in Reno, Nev. surrounded by his three children and family on February 25, 2008.
He was born Oct. 5, 1922 in Cheoah to parents Dock and Laura Carpenter Stewart. After graduation in 1943 from Western Carolina Teachers College in Cullowhee, Lawrence served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy until 1946 as an officer on board Landing Craft Infantry (Mortar)760. He received Asiatic-Pacific and Victory Medal II ribbons and engagement stars from the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After the war, Lawrence married Shirley Ann Meyer from Portland, Ore. Lawrence earned his Doctor of Education degree from Columbia University Teachers College in 1950. He moved west to accept a professorship with the School of Education at the University of California in Berkeley, Calif. that spanned 35 years. Lawrence received a Fulbright scholarship to teach for one year at the University of Reading in England. He also taught on various summer assignments at the University of Oregon and the University of Hawaii. He loved camping and was an avid fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Shirley. He is survived by sisters Imogene Brown of Bradenton, Fla. and Faye Stewart of Mooresville; daughter Sally Rae Andersen and spouse Lorin; sons Thomas Marshall Stewart and spouse Gayle and Scott Lawrence Stewart and spouse Carrie; and four grandchildren.
Lawrence was laid to rest beside his wife at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland on March 7. Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society. 		Stewart, Lawrence Hoyle (I2111)
