William Davis, a soldier of the Revolution, stole his wife, a Carpenter, from Ashe, and settled at what is still called the Davis Mountain, now the Monroe Franklin place, and which Warsaw Clark now owns, one mile and a half above the Crossnore place, where Kate, the five year old daughter of Davis, is buried under an apple tree. It is said that he first gave the name of the Cow Camp to a creek of that name which runs into the Toe River because of the fact, that, having no feed for his cattle, he camped near them on that creek and supplied them with lin tree limbs, called laps, from the time the buds began to swell till the grass came.; 		Davis, Catherine (I1366)

Osborne Lane married a Miss Crawford, a sister of old James Crawford, of Spring Branch-I suppose, older than her brother. The Crawfords were quite respectable in that day and have continued to be so down to the present time. The fruits of the marriage, as known, were eight sons, John, Thomas, Alexander, James, Robert, David, Stephen and William, and two daughters, Kesiah and Elizabeth.

James C. Lane, I think, the youngest son of old Osborne, was a most excellent man and a good citizen ; he married a Miss Lee, daughter of old John Lee, on the north side of Buck Swamp, and settled on Catfish, just opposite Latta ; he had and raised four sons, James C, Jr., Crawford, John O. and Stephen L. Lane, and four daughters, Hapsey, Sarah Anne, Orphea and Priscilla. Of the sons, James C, Jr., married a daughter of old William Bryant, a sister of the late John M. Bryant; he had and raised one son, David, and one daughter. The son married some one to the writer unknown ; he has a large family of sons and daughters, several grown; he lives in Kirby Township. The daughter married Peter McLellan, and had several children ; Peter and she (Rebecca, I think, was her name), are both dead; don't know what has become of the children - suppose they are all grown. Crawford Lane, second son of James C, Sr., married a Miss Perritt, daughter of David Perritt, and settled down on the Maiden Down and Ten Mile Bays ; he raised a large family of sons and daughters ; the names of two sons only are known-Addison and James. Addison married a daughter of John M. Bryant, and has several sons, two of whom are married, and several daughters, some grown. James Lane, son of Crawford Lane, married a daughter of the late Samuel Campbell, and has a family, how many are not known. Stephen L. Lane, tihe youngest son of James C, Sr., married Miss Flora Campbell, a daughter of the late William S. Campbell ; he was killed in the last battle of the war, just before Johnston's surrender, after having gone through the whole war ; he left his widow. Flora, and several sons and daughters, none of them personally known to the writer ; one son is named William, and one daughter became the second wife of Merideth Watson, There are several other children. Another son of James C. Lane, Sr., was John O. Lane ; he married a Miss Sweat, daughter of old George Sweat ; they had and raised a family, none of them known to the writer -both are dead. Of the daughters of James C, Sr., Hapsey married the late James Porter ; they had and raised a large family of sons and daugliters, none of wlhom are known to the writer, except Robert P. Porter, in Marion; he married a Miss Johnson, and has a family of several children, none grown. The second daughter of old James C, St., Sarah Ann, married a Mr. Jones, who either died or left the country, leaving her one child, a daughter -what has become of the daughter is unknown ; Mrs. Jones is long since dead. The third daughter of James C. Lane, St., Orphea, married a Mr. Turbeville; they had and raised a family, and have grand-children, but none of them are known. The youngest daughter of James, Sr., Priscilla, married "Sandy" Norton, who was killed or died in the war ; they had and raised three sons, Woodberry, Houston and Holland Norton, who are now among us and good citizens- especially Houston Norton, of Latta ; there may have been daughters- if any, they are unknown to the writer.; 		Lee, Mary (I1530)

!NOTES:Special thanks to David Rankin for sharing information on this family in Texas. He had found widow Elizabeth there, and he and I were able to prove (more or less) that widow Elizabeth Lane of Fayette Co., TX was the widow of Stephen C. Lane.
- The major proof is circumstantial, but very strong:
1. Elizabeth's children were born in SC and AL which matches Stephen's known residences at the times of their births.
2. George married in Montgomery and was living in Fayette in 1850 two houses from his mother.
3. George named a son "Stephen".
4. After George's death, his wife and family returned to Montgomery Co., AL where the Lanes had been before.
5. Martha Lane m. Anthony Pouncey in 1830 Montgomery Co., AL. In 1850 Frank Pouncy, 10, was with Elizabeth in TX. Anthony and Martha no where to be found. Probably dead.
* All of the above makes it pretty clear that widow Elizabeth was indeed Stephen's wife, but as far as I know no primary source document has been found that proves it 100%.;

!FAMILY BIBLE:William and Elizabeth (Bryson) Cathey Family Bible,or perhaps this was his brother James Cathey's family bible. A notation on one page attests that James Sr copied that record in 1832.
This is a really old King James Bible using the old style letter S that looked like an F. One page contains births of William and Elizabeth's family. Another page contains the births of William's brother James Cathey's children. Another page contains the deaths of William and James's father and siblings. It seems likely some pages were lost as there are no marriages listed. This record was shared with me by Guy G. Davenport of FL in the late 1980's, I believe:

"Hardy Lewis married Dicey Floyd ; they had and raised two sons, William L. and Joel W. P. Lewis, and four daughters-Betsy, who never married ; Mourning, Margaret, Lizzie and another, the wife of James D. Smith. Mourning married W. H. Grice Margaret married John Price; Lizzie married Henry Price. Of the sons of Hardy Lewis, William L. marired Flora Carmichael, daughter of Squire Dougald, on Maiden Down and Buck Swamp; they had sons, Angus, Allen C. and W. A. D.
Marion Lewis; and daughters, Catharine, Mary and Flora. Of the sons, Angus was killed in the war. Allen C. married, first, a daughter of Hiram Lee ; by this marriage he had one son, Herbert, now in Wofford College, and Capers, and three daughters, grown. The Lee wife dying, he married a daughter of George W. Smith, and by her has some small children. W. A. D. Marion Lewis, called Dougald, married a Miss Bullock in North Carolina, and lives on part of the old homestead ; has a family, sex and number unknown. Catharine married Randal McDaniel, and moved to Darlington. Mary married Randal Barnes ; has no offspring. Flora married in North Carolina, and died without issue. Joel W. P. Lewis, the youngest son of old Hardy, married a Miss Cox ; had two sons, Solon A. and Dio. The latter lately married a daughter of Duncan Nicholson. Solon A. Lewis, now at Latta, married a Miss Tart, youngest daughter of the late John W. Tart ; she died a year or so ago, leaving two children (small), both daughters. J. W. P. Lewis has three single daughters ; he died a year or so ago."

Sarah Wood was born ca 1755/65, presumably in Georgetown District, now Marion County, South Carolina. She was named in her father's Will of 1808 as his daughter "Sarah Chinners".

Sarah Wood was married to a Mr. Chinners, per her father's will of 1808. He did not include the given name of Sarah's husband though. However, other records show that Sarah Wood was married to Ezekiel Chinners, and they probably married prior to 1790.

Ezekiel Chinners was born before 1755, presumably in the present day Horry County, though then Georgetown District. I don't know who his parents were. Records show a "Chinners Swamp" in Horry County, and this is where they lived.


Ezekiel Chinners was the only "Chinners" listed in Georgetown District, SC in 1790 (in fact, he was the only Chinners in all of SC). This census was alphabetical, so I don't know who his neighbors were, or if in present Horry or Marion County (though I suspect Horry).

On 16 Oct 1792, Ezekiel and Sarah Chinners sold 100 acres to Aaron Cooper, on North side of Chinners Swamp. Witnessed by Joseph Cooper. (Horry Co, SC Deed Book A-1 page 164, transcribed on the Horry Co, SC Historical Society web pages)

Ezekiel Chinners was listed on the 1800 census in Georgetown District, Kingston County (present Horry County). His household seemed to contain a few "extra" people born before 1790, who were not home in 1790, so possibly not children, but other relatives, or boarders.

On 5 Oct 1802 Ezekiel Chinners and William McQueen witnessed two deeds from Commissioners to John Wilson for Lot # 18 (didn't say in what town). (Horry Co, SC Deed Book A-1 page 152 and 156, transcribed on the Horry Co, SC Historical Society web pages)

On 4 May 1804, Ezekiel Chinners recorded his "stock mark" (how he marked his livestock) in Horry court, as "Stockmark (used for 14 years) underbit in the right ear, 2 splits in the left, brand HC". (Horry Co, SC Deed Book A-1 page 198, transcribed on the Horry Co, SC Historical Society web pages)

On 19 Mar 1808 "Sarah Chinners" was named in the Will of her father John Wood Sr. (Probate Roll # 805, published in "Probate Records, Marion County, South Carolina Volume Two", by Lucille Utley, Danny Smith, 1985, page 123).

There is a deed dated 9 Feb 1809 where Hardy Harbert Chinners purchases land from John Dimery. At the end of the deed it says that Sarah Chinners paid Dimery, so this seems to suggest that she was associated with Hardy Harbert Chinners. Additional records on him show him to be of proper age to have been her son, so it seems a reasonable assumption. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book E, page 21, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume One Books A - E 1800-1811", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1996)

Ezekiel and Sarah Chinners apparently moved back to Marion County area sometime before 1810, for he was listed on the 1810 census in Marion District. He was on the same page with (but several house away from) widow Unity Wood, somehow connected to this family.

On 5 Oct 1814 Benjamin Dozier and wife Isabel, of Marion District, sold 280 acres to Sarah Chinners, planter, of Horry District. The deed was for $350, and the land on Gum Swamp and Jones Swamp, North East side of Great Pee Dee River, and West side of Catfish Creek. Witnesses were her brother Jesse Wood, and Stephen Burket. (Marion Co, SC Deed Book I, page 7, from "Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds Volume Two Books F-I & K 1811-1823", by Lucille Utley, and Alita White Sutcliffe, 1997)

Sometime between 1814 and 1820, the Chinners moved from Horry back to Marion, perhaps in 1814 after the purchase of the 280 acres.

On 3 Jul 1820, Ezekiel Chinners, Sarah Chinners and Hardy H. Chinners (their son, I think), all of Marion District, sold land to Silas White for $500, 280 acres "containing the plantation where we now live" on Gum Swamp, Jones Swamp. (This seems to be the same land deeded to Sarah on 5 Oct 1814, see above). Signed: Ezekiel Chinners, Sarah Chinners, Hardy H. Chinners. Witnesses were Edward Brown and Jesse Legett (Sarah's brother-in-law). Ezekiel Chinners must have died about the same time this deed was made, for Sarah was listed as head of household on the 1820 census in Marion Dist, SC. Unfortunately, this one was alphabetical, so I can't tell who her neighbors were.

Sarah Wood Chinners died sometime between 1820 and 22 Oct 1821, for on that date, Jesse Legette (her brother-in-law) made suit for letters of administration for "Sarah Chinners alias Sarah Wood". Bondsmen were Jesse Legett, Jesse Wood (her brother) and David Godbold. No heirs were named, but among the purchasers were Sarah Wood (her mother), Rebecca Wood (don't know who this is) and Jesse Wood (brother).
