!NOTES:From the Bible Record of Ruth Jane Stewart's daughter (name?). Shared with me by Carl Stewart. The original is in the possession of Mitch Watson. Spelling is as it was originally. This document also contains information on the Moss family. Apparently, this Bible belonged to Ruth Jane Stewart (1850), but the entries below were written by her daughter, so this was well after the fact for Jacob Stewart's family, so their may be inaccuracies in that part, but the more recent data is probably more reliable. I suspect this was written no earlier than ca 1880, so consider that when judging the accuracy of everything. (Anything in parenthesis was added by me, Marty Grant, as a comment and isn't part of the original record.)

Jayhue Stewart who left and went to Georgia No one know where Prealo Stewart who died between the age of 15 & 20 years of age Sallie Stewart who married Milton Moss. Lydia Stewart who married Aberham Moor who is the mother Jackson Moor who married Kate Holbrooks & Peg Henry Moor John T. Henry wife, another woman who married Black Burn man. Stacy Stewart who married Buck Colbert who died, later she married J. David Moss.

The young Ruthie ("Stewart" written in above) Moss married Johnson Moss Junor. And old Ruthie Stewart grandady Jake sister married the old man Johnson Moss. Brother to Babe Moss & old man Billie Moss who married Drusil Hooper Moss sister to Bettie Hooper Moss. Drusie was the mother of Glenville Jim Moss.

My grandmother name was Mary. And Mary mother name was Bettie Hooper before she married Babe Moss. The family was:

!REFERENCE:From a letter to me from Jennie Vee Pitts "My James M. Patterson & Easter M. Nicholson has 11 children. Their 2nd child a daughter, Mary Adaline was my great grandmother. Their 10th child a son, Samuel Jackson Patterson married and moved to Indian Territory 1892 to what is now Stillwell, Adair Co. Okla. A granddaughter, Mary Jane Patterson-White still living unless passed away just recently wrote me, Quote: Her great grandfather was SAMUEL PATTERSON b. about 1790 to 1795, wasn't sure. Samuel lived about 10 miles from Hendersonville, N.C. in Henderson County, N.C. Their home was described as being a one days journey to the top of Big Snow Bird Mountain and close to headwaters of the French Broad River. !NOTE:I thought Wilson Gilbert was very likely a son of Joseph Gilbert & Sabra Tyson. I based this on proximity, his birth being within 5 years after they married, and that I have DNA matches with other Tyson descendants (Sabra's maiden name) from the same family.
Also, Wilson Gilbert witnessed the Will of Sabra's mother, Jane Tyson, in 1797. That would have been his grandmother.
Wilson Gilbert was bound out in 1791 which fits for Joseph Gilbert died just before that.

- A big problem is a deed dated 4 Nov 1815 between Ebenezer Elliott of Chatham to Archibald McBride of Moore. Elliott sells McBride a tract of land that formerly belonged to Joseph Gilbert, deceased, sold by Sabra Gilbert the widow,and Benjamin Gilbert, John Gilbert and James Gilbert the heirs of Joseph, to Cornelius Gilbert another AND ONLY REMAINING HEIR at law ... and by him to Elliott.
If the above wording is accurate, then Wilson Gilbert is not an heir of Joseph. He is certainly related, but apparently not a son.

-- I've arbitrarily attached Wilson to Jonathan Gilbert (likely brother of Joseph above), since Wilson's oldest known son was named Jonathan. I don't know if Wilson is in fact Jonathan's son, but that's where I'll leave him pending other evidence.

-- Since I have DNA matches to the Tysons, I suspect Wilson's mother was probably a Tyson;

1. No record of his birth date has been found. However, census and other records give us enough for a estimate, though some records don't work well with the others.
2. 1800 census age 16-25, born 1774/1784
3. 1810 census age 26-44, born 1765/1784
4. The above works out to ca 1774/1784.
5. 1820 census - not found
6. 1830 census age 60-69, born 1760/1770. Too old.
7. There is no way to reconcile 1800, 1810 and 1830. However, if we ignore 1800, we can show him born ca 1765/1770. If we ignore 1830 instead, he was born ca 1774/1784.
8. In 1791 he was bound out, meaning he wasn't yet 21, thus born no earlier than 1770.
9. He married in 1799, so assuming he was at least 18 then, born ca 1781 or earlier.
10. Conclusion: Wilson Gilbert was likely born ca 1774/1781. This works with every record except the 1830 census.

!BIRTH:
The only census record we have for Mrs. Carpenter is the 1830 census wherein she is listed as age 15-19, or born ca 1810/1815. However, the same census lists her husband David in that same age group, but other records show he was older than that, born ca 1806, thus can we trust that her age is accurate on the 1830 census if his isn't?
I would say she was born ca 1810/1815 based only on the 1830 census, but perhaps she was born ca 1800/1810 if closer to David's age. The lack of additional records for her makes this somewhat difficult to work with.


!BIRTHPLACE:
Unfortunately, David Carpenter resided in the border region between Burke, Yancey and Ashe (now Watauga) which means his wife could have come from any of those counties. They married ca 1829, but there are no marriage records for them in Burke or Ashe County. Yancey wasn't created yet when they married. It was formed in 1831 from Burke and Buncombe, thus I should probably also include Buncombe as a possible birth place for her, though it would need be in that part of Buncombe that later became Yancey, much of which became Madison in 1851. I tend to doubt she was from that section though, so I lean towards Burke (Linville area) or Yancey (Toe River / Three Mile Creek) or Watauga (then Ashe) for her origin;


!NAME:
No record of her given name has been found so far.


!MAIDEN NAME:
No record of her maiden name has been found so far. However - I suspect she was a Wilson.

I have no solid proof that the 1st Mrs. David Carpenter was a Wilson. However, consider these tidbits:

1. David Carpenter and wife named their second son "Wilson" Carpenter. Why would they do not if not for a familial connection?

2. David's older brother William married Elizabeth Wilson in 1831, about two years after David married his wife. Was David's wife and William's wife siblings? That is quite common.

3. William Carpenter's wife Elizabeth is a proven child of William Wilson (1777-1847) and Ann Mackey (d 1842). David Carpenter and wife named their 1st son "William". Why? The first born son is sometimes named in honor of one of the grandfathers. David's father was Jacob. Was he named for Mrs. Carpenter's father William?

4. None of the above proves that Mrs. David Carpenter was a Wilson, but it kind of points in that direction.

5. Of course it's also possible that she wasn't a Wilson, but they chose the name for another reason.

6. Hopefully more research will resolve this mystery. DNA evidence does suggest I'm related to Wilsons from Burke/Yancey area.

7. I've concentrated my Wilson research on old Burke (Linville area) and Yancey counties. I've also studied Wilsons in Buncombe since nearby. I've looked at Wilsons in old Ashe, now Watauga since David Carpenter lived there in the 1830s and after.

Miss Wilson would be under 10 (1810/1820) if her age in 1830 is accurate (c1810/1815). Most of the Ashe and Burke county Wilsons had an apparent daughter that age with them in 1820. However, she might been a tad older, so potentially listed in the 10-15 category (1804/1810) or 16-25 (1794/1804). That means numerous suspects. However, we can eliminate some of them if that daughter is already positively identified. My notes are after each entry. The proper match should be at home here in 1820 but gone by 1830, since married ca 1829.

C 2. Susannah, daughter of David Lewis, by Miss (???) Terrell, his first wife, was born in Hanover county, Va., about 1726. She married Alexander Mackey, and moved from Albemarle county, Va., to Rutherford county, N. C., before the Revolutionary war, where she died, in 1784, from small-pox, on Broad river, a few miles from Rutherfordton. Alexander Mackey died in the same county soon after the close of the Revolutionary war. They raised six children, viz.:
D 1. John, died a bachelor in Robertson county, Tenn.
D 2. Susannah, married Rob. Young and died near the Ohio river, perhaps in the State of Ohio, or Kentucky.
D 3. Rebecca, married John Young and died near the Ohio river.
D 4. Mary, married a Mr. (???) Powers and died in Kentucky.
D 5. David, married Sally Potts and resided at New Madrid, New Madrid county, Mo., where his wife died, leaving two children. After the death of his wife he started to move. He placed his two little children on a boat and went by land himself in order to carry his stock. He was taken sick on the road and died in the Choctaw Nation: His children were never heard of afterward.
D 6. William Lewis Mackey, the youngest, was born in Rutherford county, N. C., about 1773.
Elizabeth Ashbrook, whom he married in Rutherford county, N. C., about the year 1792, was born in 1769 in Rutherford county, N. C. 		Lewis, Susannah (I15870)

William Neil, complainants father sometime in the month of Oct 1783 gave to George Cathey L65 10s, 6p to securing land in Western Country, now state of TN. Obtained 640a with William Campbell on 26 Jun 1795 grant was issued on south side of Cumberland River on Spencers Creek.

William Neil gave to his son John Niel the above tract who sold it to brother Robert Neill.

William Cathey and George Cathey, sons of George, and his executors, conveyed said land to John Neil. Violet Cathey on of the daughters of George Cathey, decd, and John Reed who married Esther another of the daughters, executed a deed of relinq.

Alexander Neil and James Neil, brothers to the complainant dated 24 Aug 1819 relinq all their rights to the land. Another deed of relinq dated 1 aug 1821 John Neil, James Neil, Sarah Neil, John Plumley, William Plumley, Archibald Plumley, Jacob Howes, Hannah Howes, Benjamin Howes, and William Howes.

"That George Cathey, Violet Cathey, Jane Adkins, Samuel Lusk and his wife Betsy, Benjamin Burgen and his wife Mary are the children & heirs of said George Cathey decd. that George Patton, John Logan and his wife Rebecca are grand children of said George Cathey Senr decd. by his daughter Margaret who intermarried with Elija Paton and who are both deceased. * Moses Grimes in Wilkes had three females (no ages), one of whom was likely his wife, the other two daughters, perhaps including Nancy;


!NOTES:Still alive as late ca 1822 for Mary Tabor was born 1822 and testified in 1905 that she'd seen Nancy Grimes.
