From my old web page:

Stephen Braddy was born before 1758. I base this on him being a landowner by 1779, and since he was probably 21 or older by then, , he had to have been born ca 1758 or earlier. His entry on the 1786 census shows him 21 and up (born before 1765). If he is the father of Fairlise Braddy (1770/75), then that would put his birth at ca 1750 or thereabouts, give or take a few years.

I don’t know where Stephen Braddy was born, but I would guess Duplin County, North Carolina, as that is where he was found later on. He apparently lived in what is still Duplin County right around present day Albertson on Matthews Creek (or Branch).

I have not done an exhaustive search of Duplin County records to see what can be found on the Braddys, but I have found some data.

I do not have the name of Stephen Braddy’s first wife, though if she were the mother of Fairlise and Thomas Braddy, then they had to have married before ca 1775.

Stephen Braddy was already a land owner by 1 Jul 1779 for he was named as an adjoining land owner in a State Grant to William Sutherland in Duplin County. The Grant was described as being on the East Side of the N E (North East Cape Fear River) and on both sides of Matthews Branch joining Juniper Branch, Bishops old Corner and Stephen Braddy. I searched the published Duplin County deeds for the period of 1750 through 1780's, and did not find when or how Stephen Braddy obtained the land he owned on Matthews Branch. He may have received it as a Land Grant, but I found no record of it in the published Grants.

18 Oct 1784, Stephen Braddy and Solomon Carter were witnesses to a deed from Richard Munds of Duplin to Edward Carter of Dobbs, for 300 acres North of Northeast Fork and West of Buck Marsh and Poley Bridge Branch on Jesse Pipkins Line. This is right in present Duplin County in the corner with Wayne and Lenoir County. (Duplin Co, NC Deed Book 1A page 133).

On 18 Jan 1785, Stephen Braddy and David Green were witnesses to a deed from William Southerland to Solomon Carter, for land on the East side of the North East (Cape Fear River) on Matthews Branch and Stephen Braddy’s line. This is just south of the 1784 deed near the present community of Albertson. (Duplin Co, NC Deed Book 1A page 213).

Stephen Brady is listed on the 1786 State Census in Duplin County, North Carolina.

On 18 Mar 1786, Stephen Braddy and Loftis Worley witnessed a deed from William Mercer to Frederick Smith for land on the East side of North East (Cape Fear) and North side of Limestone Creek and both sides of Cabbin Branch. This is close to present day Beulaville. (Duplin Co, NC Deed Book 1A page 254).

On 16 Oct 1786 a court record was filed: "Granted Stephen Brady’s petition to have his Mill as a Public Grist Mill & he be entitled to all priv & advant as are allowed to persons keeping a Publick Mill". Sometime ca 1788 (no date given), Stephen Brady was on another road Jury ordered to lay off a road from New Road crossing Limestone (creek) above Samuel Whaley’s to Purgatory where Limestone Road joins the Onslow County line. Mrs. Braddy must have died before 1790, for on 19 Jan 1790, Stephen Braddy married Sarah Williams in Duplin County. Stephen Miller was bondsman.

Stephen Brady was listed on the 1790 census in Dobbs County. He was in Duplin County before and after then, so this may indicate a temporary move, or else just a poorly defined border. He did live in the area near the Duplin - Dobbs (now Lenoir) County line.

Stephen Braddy was listed in Court records dated 18 Jul 1797 showing a list of the Insolvents for the year 1795. He was listed with 3 polls (which was probably for himself, and two sons). The 1797 Court record is the last record I’ve found for Stephen Braddy. He may have died between then and 1800. The 1797 record only mentioned him as insolvent, it is entirely possible that he was already dead by then, or that he had moved away.

!NOTES:B/D is 2 Dec 175(2) per his T/S, though the last digit is hard to make out. Census analysis shows he was born between 1750 and 1755, so 1752 fits just fine. A transcription made many years ago (perhaps in the 1950's or 1960's) interpreted the year as 1777 but that is clearly incorrect. The stone is hand carved and badly eroded. When I visited the cemetery in the 1990's, I was unable to find it. However it has now been located and photos are online at find-a-grave. His name is no longer visible, but the dates are visible so we know it is the right stone:

!NOTES:"Carpenter" is the English version of his original surname which was "Zimmerman". This surname is common in Germany and Switzerland. Many of this surname who came to America in the 1700's changed from Zimmerman to Carpenter at some point, though some kept the original name.;


!NOTES:Mathias Carpenter's parents are unknown. Some older undocumented genealogies show that his father was also named Mathias, but I have never seen any corroborating evidence for that, so I have no faith in it.;


!NOTES:DNA testing proves that descendants of Mathias Zimmerman/Carpenter closely match descendants of Bernhartd Zimmerman (1744 PA) who is of Swiss Descent. They also match Dr. George Zimmerman (1779 MD) and Nicholas Timmerman (c1743 NY). See the Carpenter DNA project for more information.
* This means those other Zimmermans have a common ancestry with Mathias. It could be one, two or many generations earlier.;

Date of death probably correct, but year of birth should be between 1750 and 1755. I visited the cemetery on Sep 29, 1995 and found several really old stones. JOHN MULLER [was] born on March 25, 1726, in Pennsylvania. His
parents, who moved there from Germany, were Bergelbach from Nashau. In 1746
he married the surviving widow, MAR. MAGDALENA, m.n. FABER, with whom he
had 13 children and in the beginning they lived on the Nurriver [New
River?]. In 1755 the Indian War drew him together with other families who
had to flee to Town Fork in Carolina, and from there he took refuge in
Bethabara, where he was awakened [converted] through the testimony of the
Brethren [Moravian Ministers] about Jesus' redeeming death, and soon after
that he moved with his family to the South Fork, not far from Muddy Creek.
When the Society in Friedberg was organized in 1770, he became a member of
that, attended the services faithfully, and in spite of several changes, he
remained with it to the end. On Feb. 9, 1780, he went to bed with a chest
illness, and on the 14th of that month he passed away in the 54th year of
his age. His tabernacle [body] was buried on the 16th after an address by

!FAMILY BIBLE:William and Elizabeth (Bryson) Cathey Family Bible,or perhaps this was his brother James Cathey's family bible. A notation on one page attests that James Sr copied that record in 1832.
This is a really old King James Bible using the old style letter S that looked like an F. One page contains births of William and Elizabeth's family. Another page contains the births of William's brother James Cathey's children. Another page contains the deaths of William and James's father and siblings. It seems likely some pages were lost as there are no marriages listed. This record was shared with me by Guy G. Davenport of FL in the late 1980's, I believe:

William Neil, complainants father sometime in the month of Oct 1783 gave to George Cathey L65 10s, 6p to securing land in Western Country, now state of TN. Obtained 640a with William Campbell on 26 Jun 1795 grant was issued on south side of Cumberland River on Spencers Creek.

William Neil gave to his son John Niel the above tract who sold it to brother Robert Neill.

William Cathey and George Cathey, sons of George, and his executors, conveyed said land to John Neil. Violet Cathey on of the daughters of George Cathey, decd, and John Reed who married Esther another of the daughters, executed a deed of relinq.

Alexander Neil and James Neil, brothers to the complainant dated 24 Aug 1819 relinq all their rights to the land. Another deed of relinq dated 1 aug 1821 John Neil, James Neil, Sarah Neil, John Plumley, William Plumley, Archibald Plumley, Jacob Howes, Hannah Howes, Benjamin Howes, and William Howes.

"That George Cathey, Violet Cathey, Jane Adkins, Samuel Lusk and his wife Betsy, Benjamin Burgen and his wife Mary are the children & heirs of said George Cathey decd. that George Patton, John Logan and his wife Rebecca are grand children of said George Cathey Senr decd. by his daughter Margaret who intermarried with Elija Paton and who are both deceased. !SUMMARY. Ancestry and close relatives:
William Hensley was likely born in the 1740's considering his oldest proven children were born in the 1760's. We don't know who his parents were. There are several candidates.

Suzanne Baird suggests William *might* be a brother to her ancestor Benjamin Hensley (died 1788) of Albemarle, as they lived fairly close to one another, are about the same age, and descendants are close DNA matches. Benjamin and William are related without doubt, but are they brothers? Could be. More research and more DNA testing may help prove or disprove it.

We don't know where William was born. Buckingham County was created in 1761 from Albemarle. Albemarle was created in 1744 from Goochland, but we think William moved to this area and wasn't born there.

2 - William Hensley is the proven father of Fielding Hensley per 1782 Buckingham Co., VA tax list. Fielding was born in the early 1760's and lived in Buckingham, Washington and Scott Co., VA.

3 - Agnes Hensley (c1763) either a single woman, or a widow of a Mr. Hensley, was associated with Fielding Hensley and also Samuel Hensley (1754). No actual proof she is a daughter or daughter-in-law of William that I'm aware of.

4 - Ichabod Hensley (c1780s) could be a grandchild of William instead of a son. However, both Fielding and Larkin named sons Ichabod, so this older one was a close relative, perhaps a younger brother of theirs, maybe a half brother considering the age difference?

!REFERENCE:THE SAMS FAMILY OF VIRGINIA." he was born in what is now Henry County, Virginia, Although he is first recorded in the tithables of Halifax County of 1773 when he was just sixteen years old. This was before the western portion of Halifax County was split off as Henry County in 1777, therefore William bas born under the jurisdiction of Halifax County as Halifax County had been split off of the Western part of Lindenburg County in 1752. The date of his birth is confirmed by the data on his grave stone in the Sams family cemetery south of Jonesboro, Union County, Illinois, where he died in 1825. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Virginia Continental Regiment March 28, 1776. There is no record of when William left the service. He did return to Henry County to be married to Martha Edwards. Martha was the daughter of Thomas Edwards who died November 17, 1790 and was a neighbor of John Sams Born 1749, a brother of William Sams, Jr. who lived on Turkey Cock Creek in what is now Henry County, Virginia. Martha's father willed to Martha Sams one negro girl names Jane. Martha and William, Jr. were married before 1780, since William established his own household by recording a survey of 223 acres south of what is now Martinsville, Virginia and east of Ridgeway on Simon Creek, a branch of Matrimony Creek, which flows into the Smith River east of Ridgeway where the present route 622 crosses Smith River. Martha would have been 16 years old at the time of her marriage, if she were married in 1779. She died on July 19, 1824 at the age of 61 years making her birthdate 1763, as shown on her tombstone where she is buried next to William, Jr. in the Sams family cemetery south of Jonesboro, Union County, Illinois. William was further recorded in Henry County, Virginia as being on the tax list in 1782. He was also recorded in a court record as having been granted compensation for twenty pounds of pork furnished General Lee's troops in 1783. Martha's first son William Sams III was born in 1780 confirming the probable date of her marriage as 1779 and William's service in the Revolutionary Was as probably being three years. Sometime after 1783 and before 1791 William Sams, Jr. went directly from Henry County to Buncombe County, now Madison County, North Carolina to follow his brothers John born 1749, James born 1750 and Edmond, born 1757. John and Edmond had first gone to Tennessee and James had first gone to Burke County, North Carolina."; 		Sams, Lt William (I4387)

!NOTES:I found out about this Baker line after I'd been researching my ancestors a number of years. The first connection was finding out that Mary, wife of my ancestor Thomas B. Grant (d 1845 Macon Co, NC) was a Miller. Ollie Vee Clark (now deceased) told me about Mary being a Miller. Strong circumstantial evidence pointed towards Mary's parents being Joseph Miller (1790-1880) and Sarah Cox (c1794/1800-c1835). After getting in touch with my cousin Claire Morelli, I discovered that she and her Aunt Helen had data showing that Sarah Cox was a daughter of Aaron Cox and Olly Baker. Claire and Helen's research has helped me a great deal on the Cox and Miller families. Claire and I began a long lasting correspondence, and together we worked out many things on these two families. Unfortunately, neither of us have done much research on Olly Baker's family.

There is a marriage bond in Lincoln County, NC dated 4 Jan 1787 for Aaron Cox and Olly Baker, so we know for sure that was her maiden name. The bondsman was Absolam Bonham (who was married to Aaron Cox's sister in 1785). The 1790 census shows several Baker families in Lincoln Co, NC, and of them, a Joseph Baker was fairly close to Aaron Cox's household.

For the 1790 census, Lincoln County, NC was divided up into companies, each with a number. Most of my Cox family was found in the Sixth Company. There were only three Baker's listed in that company, Joseph, Joseph Jr and Abrm (Abraham or Abram) Baker. Of these, Joseph (Sr) was the closest to the Aaron Cox family, only about 17 households away.

I've not done enough research yet to be even reasonably sure that Joseph Baker is Olly's father. However, Olly did name one of her children "Joseph Cox", so that is a clue at least. Joseph Cox in 1790 only had two people in his household, one man over 16, and one female. This could indicate a newlywed couple with no children yet, or it could indicate an older couple, with all their children gone from home. Much more research will be needed to figure out if Joseph Baker is Olly Baker Cox's father, but for now, he is my prime suspect. There were eight Baker household's in the 1790 census of Lincoln Co, NC, including Elias Baker; Phillip Baker; Susanna Baker (bef 1755); Joseph Baker; Peter Baker (bef 1755); Phil. Baker (1755/74); Abrm Baker (bef 1755); and Joseph Baker Jr. Of these, a few were still in Lincoln for the 1800 census, including: Abraham Baker (bef 1755); Philip Baker (1755/74); Susanna Baker (bef 1755); and Peter Baker (bef 1755). There were also several new Baker families listed in 1800 including: Barnard Baker (1755/74); James Baker (1755/74); Sarah Baker (bef 1755); Nathan Baker (1755/74); James Baker (bef 1755); and John Baker (1774/84). Of these, Barnard, Abraham, James (1755/74) and Sarah (bef 1755) were near the Cox family.

By 1810 Aaron Cox and Olly Baker and their children moved to nearby Buncombe Co, NC. There weren't many Baker's in Buncombe County, so if any of her family members moved there to, it isn't apparent.

It will take a lot more research than I have currently done to figure out Olly Baker's family. I plan to work on this as time permits. The answers may be found in the Lincoln County Deed records or court records. 		Baker, Olly (I10498)

Grace Davis and her eldest son Richard represent that John Davis in 1784 "by certain Instruments of writing did manumit them." They further relate that Grace has "continued to enjoy all the rights of a free Woman" and that Richard "has ever enjoyed the Priviledge of a Freeman," even serving "as an artilleryman in the cause of liberty." Grace, having "borne a number of children all of whom have & do continue to enjoy their freedom," is advised that her manumission "is not perfect more especially as to her Children without an act of Assembly." The petitioners therefore "humbly pray your honorable body to take such measures as in your great wisdom shall think necessary."

[In January of 1804 a white man James Wood killed an Indian child and wounded his father near Pigeon in Buncombe County North Carolina. The Secretary of War instructed RJM to travel to that place to look into the matter and to offer a reward of $500 for the apprehension of Wood. after Feb 23, 1804]

Jacob Baker was born ca 1760/1765 per census analysis. It isn't known where he was born, though perhaps in Rowan Co., NC where he seems to have lived later on. Jacob's parents are unknown, nor are any siblings known or suspected. He lived many years in Ashe Co., NC where many Bakers lived, but he doesn't seem to be related to that large Baker family.

There were Bakers in Rowan County as early as the 1750's when the county was first formed. The relationships of these early Bakers to Jacob Baker is unknown. Perhaps there is none.

Jacob Baker's name does not appear in the Rowan County Court Minutes (1753-1762) nor in the Rowan County Deeds (1753-1785) (as published by Jo White Linn).

Jacob Baker married someone, probably in the mid 1780's in Rowan Co., NC. No marriage record was found, nor has any record been found that gives Mrs. Baker's name.

Jacob Baker lived somewhere along Grants Creek in Rowan County. Grants Creek rises in southern Rowan in the present City of Kannapolis, and flows north westerly through Salisbury emptying into the Yadkin River. It is about 18 miles in length. Jacob lived somewhere along its waters.

On 11 Feb 1786 Jacob (x) Baker, Oliver Hendren and Thomas Prather witnessed a deed from Jacob Booe, Wheelwright, to Benjamin Booe for land on Dutchman’s Creek. (Rowan Co., NC Deed Book 17 page 512 from Abstract of the Deed Books 15-19 of Rowan County, North Carolina, 1797-1807. James W. Klutz, 1997.)

On 18 Feb 1786 Jacob Booe (signed in German) deeded land to Joseph Booe on Dutchman’s Creek. Jacob (x) Baker, Jacob (x) Coone, Thomas Prather and were witnesses. Jacob Baker signed in the German form. This may not be the same Jacob Baker as Dutchman's Creek is in present day Davie County several miles from Grants Creek. (Rowan Co., NC Deed Book 15 page 136 from Abstract of the Deed Books 15-19 of Rowan County, North Carolina, 1797-1807. James W. Klutz, 1997.)

Jacob Baker of Dutchman's Creek is clearly a different person from Jacob Baker of Grants Creek, but for the sake of completeness, his records will be included herein, just in case.

The 1790 census shows only one Jacob Baker in Rowan. The census was roughly alphabetical, but within groups, presumably by community. Some of the other members of Jacob's group were names that appear with him frequently in the deeds such as Richard Graham, members of the Freeze family, David Houk and others. Griffith Rutherford was also in that group. This is clearly the Jacob Baker who lived on Grants Creek. No sign of the Jacob Baker of Dutchman's Creek on this census.

One of the unknown sons may be Phillip Baker (1780/90) who was near Jacob later on in Ashe Co., NC. The unknown daughter might be Mary Margaret Baker (c1790) who was also near Jacob in Ashe County, and was born in Rowan.

Jacob Baker was mentioned in a deed dated 7 Aug 1792 between Capt. Richard Graham and Paul Barringer, Esquire (of Mecklenburg Co., NC). The deed was for land on the north side of Grants Creek adjoining David Boston, Jacob Baker, Frederick Severt, James McCulloch, Martin Phifer and Jacob Boston. Witnesses were Will Cathey, L. S. Beard. (Rowan Co., NC Deed Book 12 page 728 from Abstract of the Deed Books 11-14 of Rowan County, North Carolina, 1786-1797. James W. Klutz, 1996)

The above shows that Jacob Baker was already a land owner by 1792. Where did he get the land? No deeds were found for him prior to that date. Perhaps it was a land grant. There should be a record of it somewhere. Most of the other names in the deed were all found near Jacob on the 1790 census so this is clearly that same Jacob.

On 1 Sep 1793 Jacob Stalling and wife Ann sold land to Jacob Baker, for £65. It was 217 3/4 acres adjoining William Pool, Samuel Howel, Mary Rash, George Koonse, Stephen Ellis, Harvey Jones, Robert Bedwell. Witnesses were James Noland, Henry (x) Baker. (Rowan Co., NC Deed Book 13 page 379 from Abstract of the Deed Books 11-14 of Rowan County, North Carolina, 1786-1797. James W. Klutz, 1996)

The names in this deed were listed on the 1790 census in Rowan in the section after Jacob Baker's section, so they were probably living near him, though not "next door" as it were. Henry Baker could be a brother or other close relation.

On 16 Sep 1794 Samuel Upright, Weaver (signed in german) sold land to Jacob Baker, Blacksmith, for £60, being 60 acres north side of north fork of Grants Creek adjoining Peter Freeze, Jacob Freeze, Henry Houk, Frederick Sickler. Witnesses were Matt Cathey, Alex Cathey. (Rowan Co., NC Deed Book 16 page 204 from Abstract of the Deed Books 15-19 of Rowan County, North Carolina, 1797-1807. James W. Klutz, 1997.)

This is clearly the same Jacob Baker from the 1790 census based on the neighbors.

On 17 Apr 1796 Jacob Baker (and Josiah Tomlinson) witnessed a deed from David Woodson Sr to James Gordon being 278a Jameys Creek. (Rowan Co., NC Deed Book 16 page 381 from Abstract of the Deed Books 15-19 of Rowan County, North Carolina, 1797-1807. James W. Klutz, 1997.)

On 18 Jan 1797 David Houk sold land to Peter Freeze, which included a Sawmill adjoining Jacob Baker, Henry Freeze Sr, John Freeze, the Sawmill dam, James McCulloch and Samuel Freeze. (Rowan Co., NC Deed Book 14 page 752 from Abstract of the Deed Books 11-14 of Rowan County, North Carolina, 1786-1797. James W. Klutz, 1996)

The names in this deed were all listed in the same section with Jacob Baker on the 1790 census.

On 8 May 1798 Jacob Baker (and Martha McPeters) witnessed a deed from John Reed, John Campbell, and Charles McPeters, executors of Daniel McPeters, to Michael Baker, for 173 acres on both sides of Back Creek adjoining Fergus Graham and Stewart. (Rowan Co., NC Deed Book 16 page 260 from Abstract of the Deed Books 15-19 of Rowan County, North Carolina, 1797-1807. James W. Klutz, 1997.)

It isn't certain if this is the same Jacob Baker from Grants Creek or not.

On 18 May 1799 Jacob Booe Sr (signed in German), planter, sold land to Jacob Baker, planter, for £40, 70 acres adjoining Samuel Barley, Squire Boone (formerly), Henry Baker (formerly), and George Boone. Wit: Henry Buckner, Isaac Linster. (Rowan Co., NC Deed Book 16 page 746 from Abstract of the Deed Books 15-19 of Rowan County, North Carolina, 1797-1807. James W. Klutz, 1997.)

This is probably not the same Jacob Baker from Grants Creek, but rather the one from Dutchman's Creek region (present day Davie County).

There were two Jacob Bakers listed on the 1800 census in Rowan Co., NC. One of them had a very large family, but it doesn't align with the 1790 census entry for Jacob (of Grants Creek), so it is probably Jacob of Dutchman's Creek (present day Davie County). This is further proven by the fact that Jacob is listed next to Jacob Booe who sold him the land on Dutchman's Creek. The other entry in 1800 is perfect match for the 1790 entry, so that one is probably Jacob of Grants Creek. He had many of the same neighbors from 1790 and from the various deeds in the 1790's.

On 24 Nov 1801 Jacob Baker of Rowan Co., NC sold land to Joseph Orneel, late of Newcastle Co., PA, for $180, being 60a north side of north fork Grants Creek adjoining Peter Freeze, Jacob Freeze, Henry Houk, and Frederick Sighler. Witnessed by Matthew Brandon, Betsey Brandon. (Rowan Co., NC Deed Book 18 page 226 from Abstract of the Deed Books 15-19 of Rowan County, North Carolina, 1797-1807. James W. Klutz, 1997.)

This deed in 1801 probably signals Jacob's removal to Ashe Co., NC for just prior he had entered some land in Ashe probably with the intention of moving there.

Ashe County was formed in 1799 from Wilkes. Jacob Baker's name does not appear in the Wilkes County Court Minutes (1778-1788) or in the deed books (1778-1803), so he does not seem to have been there earlier than 1801. It isn't 100% certain that Jacob Baker of Grants Creek, Rowan Co., NC is the same Jacob Baker who lived in Ashe and Wilkes Counties, but it seems very likely as those counties are nearby, and Jacob's (unproven) children were born in Rowan and married and lived in Ashe.

On 11 Aug 1801 Jacob Baker entered 500 acres in Ashe County on the north fork of New River adjoining Charles Roark's field including a Sugar Camp. (North Carolina Land Entry # 426 from Abstracts of Land Entries Ashe County NC Part 1 (Feb 1800 - Jun 1809) by Dr. A.B. Pruitt, 1994)

On 6 Aug 1805 Jacob Baker entered 100 acres on south fork of New River beginning at lane where said Baker lives. (North Carolina Land Entry # 1256 from Abstracts of Land Entries Ashe County NC Part 1 (Feb 1800 - Jun 1809) by Dr. A.B. Pruitt, 1994)

On 13 Feb 1808 Jacob Baker entered another 100 acres bordering his own land where he lives including vacant land towards Piney Knob. (North Carolina Land Entry # 1833 from Abstracts of Land Entries Ashe County NC Part 1 (Feb 1800 - Jun 1809) by Dr. A.B. Pruitt, 1994)

For some reason he moved to neighboring Wilkes County for a little while.

On 9 Aug 1809, Jacob Baker (and John Judd, and John McQueary) witnessed a deed from Robert Bruce to Larkin Cash for land on Reddies River and Browns Creek. (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book G-H page 371 from Wilkes County, N.C., Deed Books D, F-1 and G-H, 1795-1815, Mrs. W. O. Absher)

He was listed on the census in Wilkes Co, NC for 1810. Though there were other Baker families there, he wasn't listed near any of them. His 1810 household seemed to contain extra people, old enough to have been with him in 1800, but who weren't. No way to know who they were for certain. They weren't his own children, though a few of them could be. Perhaps he remarried in the 1800's and the rest of these were step-children.

By 1815 Jacob was back in Ashe County. He was listed on the tax list there for the year 1815 in "Captain Baker's District". He was the only Baker listed in that district, so presumably he was "Captain Baker". He was listed with 586 acres on Beaver Creek. His land entries total 700 acres, so perhaps he had disposed of some of it by 1815, or perhaps it wasn't granted to him yet.

Jacob Baker was listed on the 1820 census in Ashe Co, NC. Unfortunately, the 1820 Ashe County census was alphabetical, so we can't determine where anyone lived, nor who their neighbors were.

Jacob Baker was still in Ashe Co, NC for the 1830 census. Fortunately, this one was in the original order, so we can determine (more or less) where each person lived and who their neighbors were. Jacob Baker was listed somewhat close to Phillip Baker, who is probably his son (no direct proof of that though).
