!NOTES:John Davis *might* be my ancestor, or perhaps not. In 1764 he freed his slave "Grace" for meritorious service, etc. That could suggest he was her father or perhaps the father of her children. Of course it's possible there was no such biological connection. Regardless, I am interested in him, if not as a blood ancestor, then as a "Slaveholder ancestor" as Grace Davis is my ancestor via her son Richard Davis and his (unproven) son Cornelius Davis (c1805-aft 1890). By Cornelius's generation the family had gone from "Free colored" to White.

That *could* mean she was his daughter, or it could mean he was the father of her children, or it could mean neither of those things. However, I do have DNA matches with members of the Davis and related families that suggest she is biologically connected. !NOTES:There are several Matthew Pattersons in old Pennsylvania Records (Lancaster County for example) and in Augusta Co., VA records. One of them may be this same man. Most that I've looked at have been "claimed" as other men, but i don't know that those conclusions are correct. Much research is needed.


!NOTES:B/D unknown, nor have any records been found to help narrow it down. Old enough to receive a Grant in 1762, so 21 or older then (born c 1741 or before). Probably born in 1720's at least, if he is the father of Matthew (Jr) born ca 1749 or earlier;


!NOTES:There was a Mathias Peterson in Tryon (now Lincoln) Co., NC while Matthew Patterson was there. There has been some confusion among their records I've included both, but with notes as to who is who;


!NOTES:Many years ago, Valeska Vicars shared a note about a 1762 land grant for Matthew Patterson in Craven Co., NC. I realized recently that it had to be Craven Co., *SC* instead, which once covered a huge portion of that state. I found records online at the SC Archives related to that land grant. Matthew Patterson had 150 acres in the High Hills between Wataree and Black Rivers as far back as 1758. This is modern Sumter Co., SC, which is a goodly distance from where he later lived in NC. Of course it could be the same Matthew Patterson, but at present, I have no way of knowing if it is the same man. Those records are transcribed below.

!NOTES:In the Will of George Cathey , daughter Ann was listed as "Ann Moore". The Will is now lost, unfortunately, but was cited in an 1812 deed regarding 2,500 acres in Tennessee that he willed to his daughters Violet Cathey, Esther Cathey and "Ann Moore."
We know that Esther married John Reed ca 1788, and that Ann was married to Alexander Neill around that same period, thus George must have written his Will ca 1788, perhaps in preperation for one of his trips to Tennessee on the chance he might not return. He was dead by 1790.




!COURT: 1 May 1823 Wilson Co, TN Robert Neill, Complt vs. George Cathey et al (long list of heirs).
William Neil, complainants father sometime in the month of Oct 1783 gave to George Cathey L65 10s, 6p to securing land in Western Country, now state of TN. Obtained 640a with William Campbell on 26 Jun 1795 grant was issued on south side of Cumberland River on Spencers Creek.

William Neil gave to his son John Niel the above tract who sold it to brother Robert Neill.

William Cathey and George Cathey, sons of George, and his executors, conveyed said land to John Neil. Violet Cathey one of the daughters of George Cathey, decd, and John Reed who married Esther another of the daughters, executed a deed of relinq.

Alexander Neil and James Neil, brothers to the complainant dated 24 Aug 1819 relinq all their rights to the land. Another deed of relinq dated 1 aug 1821 John Neil, James Neil, Sarah Neil, John Plumley, William Plumley, Archibald Plumley, Jacob Howes, Hannah Howes, Benjamin Howes, and William Howes.

"That George Cathey, Violet Cathey, Jane Adkins, Samuel Lusk and his wife Betsy, Benjamin Burgen and his wife Mary are the children & heirs of said George Cathey decd. that George Patton, John Logan and his wife Rebecca are grand children of said George Cathey Senr decd. by his daughter Margaret who intermarried with Elija Paton and who are both deceased. Also Robert Cain & Daniel Cain are grand children of said George decd by his daughter Elizabeth who intermarrired first with Robert Cain, also James Reed grand child of said George decd by his daughter Elizabeth by her second husband Robert Reed, the same Robert Cain, Robert Reed and Elizabeth being now all dead. !NOTES:The bible record contradicts other researchers claims that Mary's father was Daniel Brown. It was probably assumed that Mary Brown was a sister of Jane Brown (proven d/o Daniel) who married John Carter. Brothers marrying sisters was common enough. However, the Bible record contradicts that, and does explain why Edward was dismissed for marrying a non Quaker even though Daniel Brown and family were Quakers. Apparently Joseph Brown was not.
- It wouldn't be surprising to find that this Joseph Brown was a brother to Daniel Brown as they lived in the same area.
- Daniel had a son named Joseph who potentially could be the same Joseph who is Mary's father, if he was Daniel's oldest, and from a prior marriage. Just speculation;

"The history of the George family in Virginia dates back almost to the
beginning of the seventeenth century, when Henry George came over from
England in the good ship "Assurance". Lieutenant Col. John George, a son of
Henry George the immigrant, was granted a large tract of land on Bagley's
Creek in Isle of Wight County prior to 1640 and represented Isle of Wight in
the House of Burgesses in 1653. A grandson of Col. George, also named John,
married Ursula Dudley, a daughter of JOHN DUDLEY, of Middlesex and URSULA
BEVERLY. Ursula Beverly was the dau of Robert Beverly and Ursula Byrd, dau of
Col William Byrd of Westover.
John Dudley George, son of John George & Ursula Dudley, died at Williamsburg
about 1790, leaving a son, Lewis George, who was born in 1779. Lewis George
md Agnes Wilson and to this union were born three sons and two daughters.

!NOTES:Christian Miller was of German Origin. He was one of the the pioneer settlers on the Upper Yadkin River in what was then Rowan County, North Carolina. His community was called "Miller's Settlement" for him and his family. That was on the South branch of Deep Creek, near modern day Hamptonville, Yadkin County. CHRISTIAN was a prominent citizen and a Baptist. His daughter Elizabeth married Captain Mathias Zimmerman a German Baptist, and his daughter Catherine married George Lang (Long) a prominent Moravian.

When the Moravian George Soelle visited Christian Miller in June of 1771 he described him as a "Man well into his middle ages". That would put him around 50. Nothing is mentioned of his wife or other children, if he has any. There was also another Christian Miller in Surry County, he was much younger than our Christian, and he eventually left the state.

Christian's name was on a 1771 map showing exactly where he lived. He was listed by Soells as being 5 miles from William "Billy" Grant in 1771.

Therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die Do make and Ordain this my last Will and Testament that is to say, Principally & first of all I give and recommend my Soul into the Hands of God that gave it, and for my body I recommend it to the Earth to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my Executors, Nothing Doubting, but at the General Resurrection I shall receive the same by The might power of God. And as touching such Worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give, devise and dispose in the following manner & form.

Imprimis. It is my will and I do order that all my just debts & funeral charges be paid and satisfied,

Item, I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son Jacob Miller whom I likewise ordain & constitute my only sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament, all and signular the Lands, Messuages and Tenements, together with all my horses, cattle, sheep, Hogs, etc. and all my household goods of furniture both moveable & inmovable with all my whole & personal estate of what kind so ever to him his heirs & Assigns for ever.
