!NOTES:I haven't found any solid proof as to what her name might have been though Craig is a good possibility.
(1) She was born ca 1810/20 per the 1840 census, and died sometime between 1848 and ca 1855, presumably in Union Co., GA.
(2) She would have married Joshua Gilbert before ca 1838, presumably in Yancey Co., NC, though perhaps in Rutherford Co., NC (no marriage record found for them in that county).
(3) I've seen several Craig connections, so perhaps she was a Craig. Example, in Apr 1839 William Craig of Rutherford made a deed to James Hall, and included a note due Joshua Gilbert.
(3) son Elijah Gilbert resided with Elijah Craig in 1870.
(4) Husband's brother Daniel Gilbert married a Craig, d/o Pleasant & Nancy. Mrs. Joshua Gilbert could be a sister.
(5) If any descendants of this first marriage take a DNA test, they should match other members of this Craig family if Mrs. Joshua Gilbert is a Craig. I'm not from this marriage so I don't match any Craigs which makes sense;

!NOTES:I was trying to determine who Sarah, 2nd wife of Pinkney James was. I found no primary record of her surname. I looked for all women named Sarah born ca 1843 who were in the same area as Pinkney James in 1880 and found one pretty good match: Sarah Lewis, d/o William S. Lewis, and widow of Robert Edwards. In 1880 she was with her parents and her brother William. In 1900 brother William was just three households from Pinkney and Sarah. I thought this was pretty good, though still circumstantial. Then I found that the Rev. Simeon Campbell reported Sarah Lewis's death date as 12 Jun 1902. It was one day before he buried Sarah James, so therefore it is 99.9% certain they are one and the same.;

Robert married Sarah Lewis, and left two sons, George and Stanly; they went to Texas some years ago; George died in Texarkana, and was Mayor of that city at the time of his death, and was otherwise a prosperous man; he being a single man, his property was inherited by his only brother, Stanly Edwards, who was also in Texas, is yet there, and is said to be wealthy and a good citizen of the "Lone Star" State.

"Jonathan Lewis, brother of old Hardy, married, first. Susannah Porter, of Columbus County, N. C. ; by her he had two children, one son, Evan, and one daughter, Pennsy or Pennsylvania; his second wife was Feraiba Strickland, and by her he had two sons, William S. and Joel. Of the children by the first marriage, Evan Lewis married Miss Margaret Cribb, and by the marriage had two sons, Jonathan and Dempsy, and two daughters, Carrie and Adaline, called Addie. Of the daughters, Carrie Lewis married Dr. F. M. Monroe, of the Latta section; by this marriage several children were born. Addie, the younger daughter, married Oliver Williams, of North Carolina; they have two sons. Of the sons of Evan Lewis, the eldest, Jonathan, has never married-a young man about fifty years of age, of good habits and morals, a well-to- do, good citizen and reliable every way. Why he has not married and made some good woman happy, is a mystery, which, perhaps, will never be solved! Dempsy Lewis, the younger brother, married in early life. Miss Eliza Jane Stackhouse, daughter of the late Mastin C. Stackhouse ; they have ten children, eight sons and two daughters ; the sons are Taylor, Leon, Marvin, Victor-these are grown ; four others, Odell, Rupert, Evan and Ernest - these are not grown; the two daughters, Maggie and Addie, near grown-not one of the ten children married ; he is a good man and substantial citizen. William S. Lewis, by old Jonathan's second marriage, married Miss Rhoda Mace (both now dead) ; they had five children, Sarah, W. Evan, Anne, Joel J. and J. Wesley. Sarah married Robert Edwards ; had two sons, Sandy and George ; the father is dead. The two sons went to Arkansas ; Sandy is dead ; George is in Texarkana, and is Sheriff of that county or the one in which that city is located, and is well to do. W. Evan is on the old homestead, married a Miss Avant, and has some family (young) ; is a good citizen. Anne married, first, Marion Avant; by whom she had one son, Willie, who grew up to manhood and died-a very promising young man ; his mother, the widow, married again John A. Wilson, of Wilmington, N. C, and is, as it is said, doing well. Joel and Wesley went West; Joel is said to be doing well in New Orleans. Pennsy, the only daughter of old Jonathan Lewis, and full sister of Evan Lewis, married, first, Angus Carmichael, and by him she had one child, a daughter, who grew up and married John W. Norton, as hereinbefore stated in or among the Norton family ; Pennsy, the widow, then married John Norton, the father of Hon. James Norton, and who has already been noticed among the Norton family. Evan Lewis was a capital man and good citizen- a useful man in his day ; was a good surveyor -plats, made by him, are now to be seen often, and bear the scrutiny of the Courts. He was opposed to the Confederate War, but had the good sense to keep his mouth shut, and to "stand to one side and let the procession pass by." 		Lewis, Sarah M (I119)

!OBIT:MARION — Mrs. Daisy Belle Cooper Huggins Campbell, 87, died Thursday, August
28, 2008 at Marion County Medical Center after an illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 30 at Marion
Church of God, with Rev. Steve Small and Rev. Allan Black officiating. Burial
will follow in Reedy Creek Cemetery, directed by Smith-Collins Funeral Home.
Mrs. Campbell was born January 19, 1921 in Marion County, a daughter of the
late Archie and Alice Shelley Cooper. She had worked with Heritage Sportswear
and was a homemaker. Mrs. Campbell was a member of Marion Church of God.
Surviving Mrs. Campbell are: her Children: Bobbie Jean King of Marion, Jewell
Harrelson of Sumter, Billy Huggins of Columbia, Willie Huggins of Marion and
Betty Small of Laurinburg, N.C.; her Stepchildren: Pat Skipper, Marie
McIntyre, Faye Grant, Freddie Campbell and Billy Campbell, all of Marion; 9
Grandchildren; 19 Great Grandchildren; 9 Step-Grandchildren; 7 Step-Great
Grandchildren; and a Sister: Gladys C. Soles of Marion.
Mrs. Campbell was predeceased by her first husband, Liston Huggins; her
second husband, Alva Campbell; a son, Jackie Huggins; 2 daughters, Helen Floyd
and Mary Alexander; and a brother, Neil Cooper.
Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6 til 8 P.M. at Smith-Collins

!OBITUARY:
Garland Samuel Grant Jr., a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2025, in Greenville, NC, at the age of 83. Born on December 20, 1942, in Topton, NC, Garland led a life dedicated to his craft and family.
Garland spent his career as a skilled sawfiler, sharing his expertise with numerous sawmills across North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Georgia. His passion for his work was evident to all who knew him, and he took great pride in training others in his field. At home, Garland maintained a saw shop where he repaired saws for many small sawmills in eastern North Carolina. Despite receiving countless offers to share his knowledge beyond the borders of North Carolina and even internationally, Garland cherished his life in his beloved state and chose to remain close to home.
He was preceded in death by his father, Garland Grant Sr., his mother, Luella George Grant, his brother, Marvin Alan Grant Sr., and his sister, Luann Grant Meggs.
Garland is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Creech Grant, his brother, Richard Lamar Grant Sr., and his children: son, Garland Samuel "Sonny" Grant III (Brenda), daughter, Kerrie Lanette Grant (Woody), stepson, Richard Alan Denton (Leaster), and stepdaughter, Teresa Denton Clayton (Thomas/TG). He leaves behind cherished memories with his grandchildren: Jamie Keel (Paul), Jonathan Grant, Kaden Grant, Cierra Denton, Tara Clayton Queen (Jason), and Trenton Clayton (Kathryn), as well as his great-grandchildren: Autumn Keel, Sam Keel, Jackson Queen, Jocilyn Queen, Bennett Clayton, and Lainey Clayton.
A celebration of life will be held on January 2, at 2:00pm at the West Belhaven Church of Christ (1080 W Main St Ex, Belhaven, NC 27810).
Garland's legacy of hard work, dedication, and love for his family will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Widow Margaret Curtis Stroud lived with Mary and her husband Joshua Curtis in 1838 (per old letter) and with them in 1850 (per census). That does not actually prove that Margaret is Mary's mother, but it is highly likely that she is.

Death Certificate of Mary's daughter Cassie (1836-1918) lists parents as "Joshua Curtis" and "Mary Elizabeth Stroud."

If she is a widow, I don't know who her husband was. I once thought she was same person as Mary, wife of Morgan Taylor, but there is ample evidence that she was Mary Surles, and also that she and Mary Hyatt Taylor are two different people.;

Hi Rick,

Great to hear from you. I have a little on your Dock Hensley, but not much:
1. He was listed on the 1900 census in McDowell Co., WV with another family, listed as a boarder and a Day Laborer. He was born Jun 1872, age 27, widowed, born VA and both parents born VA.
2. He was listed on the 1910 census in Pike Co., KY with wife Lora, listed as his 2nd wife. She and the older children were born in WV.
3. I found a marriage record in Wyoming Co., WV that might be them, it is a Dock N. Hensley and Lora Ellis marrying in 1908 (copy attached). It lists his parents as Frank and Kate and that he was born in Mingo Co., WV. Might not be same person, but I don’t know who else it might be.
4. He is on 1920 census in Pike Co., KY with apparent 3rd wife Matilda, and several young children.
5. They are on the 1930 census in Pike Co., KY. One of their children is “Bob” age 4 which is probably your father, if born ca 1925/26. There was a Lawrence Hensley age 29 (c1901) just a few houses away. He was born in KY as were both his parents. Might not be closely related.
I wasn’t able to find a Frank & Kate Hensley in any of my records. You mentioned Dock is a son of Lilborn Hensley. Which one? Do you have any info on him? I have several men of that name in my files, but none with a son Dock, at least not that I can lay my hands on right now. 		Hensley, Dock Spurgeon (I78649)
