However, Sellers lists Hugh's wife as a Godbold, and the 1860 census shows a widow Sallie Welch (c1780) living with them. Need more evidence to be certain who Dicey's parents are.

There is a Dicey Godbold, minor child of John Godbold 16 Nov 1811 (See Probate Roll # 293 John Godbold), that could easily be this same person, but no proof;

!NOTES:Reference this group email from David Hindman regarding Andrew's sons as an overview of what proof there is (4/10/2019):

1750 Morris was the father of Jeremiah, and thus your ancestor.  1750 Morris is generally believed to be a son of Andrew Baker Sr of Grayson County Virginia.  We don't have any documentary evidence for that belief.  I'm reserving a small doubt about 1750 Morris' parents just in case.
I'm also reluctant to assign birth years to some of Andrew Sr's children because we have little documentation for them.  The generally accepted birth dates are reasonable guesstimates.
We know from a note found in the Cox v. Newell case file that Andrew Sr of Grayson County was the father of Rev. Andrew Jr.  We know from Elijah Callaway via the Draper papers that John was a brother of Andrew Jr.  We know from Rev John J Dickey's 1898 interview with Allen E. Robertson that:
1 - John Baker Sr was called "Renta"
2 - John Baker Sr had a brother Bowling Baker and a brother George Baker
3 - John Baker Sr was father of Julius "Bob", "Durkham" John, George who married Esther Robertson, and James called "Clay Bank".
Allen E Robertson had personal knowledge of this information because his aunt married George Baker (the son of John Baker Sr).
So we have secondary sources attesting to the following sons of Andrew Sr:  Andrew Jr, John "Renta", Bowling and George.  As best I know we have no such sources naming the following as sons of Andrew Sr: 1750 Morris, Robert, and James.

She was listed as Tempey "Warn" on her marriage record to Jacob Stewart in 1846, so that gibes. "Ellis" and "Ellison (aka Allison) are similar enough, so based only on above, I'd conclude she was definitely an Ellis, Ellison or Allison, married 1st to Mr. Warren, then to Jacob Stewart.
(7) However, and this is a big problem, she herself said her maiden name was Stroud on Civil War Pension papers for her husband's Union service. If she was a Stroud by birth, did none of her children know that? Seems unlikely, thus the quandary.

1. Peter G. Stroud was in Macon Co., NC by 1835 and in Rabun Co., GA by 1836 and does not appear on the 1840 census, but was probably still in GA. He is on the 1850 census in Union Co., GA. I've found no original records showing him with a middle name or initial, yet I have "Grayson" as his middle name. what source?

2. Peter E. Stroud (c1808 per 1850 census or ca 1813 per 1860 census). He was in Burke in 1835, 1840 and 1850. Records prove he is a son of William Sr.

3. Peter Stroud was born ca 1800/10 per the 1830 census entry (Burke). He was unmarried then. He was on the 1835 voter list in Burke. No further record of him.

Peter G. Stroud was closely associated with the children of James A. Stroud (1800/10) who married Deborah England, strongly suggesting they were brothers, and other records strongly suggest both are sons of Peter Jr. This Peter *seems* to still be home with Peter Jr. in 1830.

One of the Peter Strouds was in Tennessee in 1832 with his "uncle" David Stroud as proven by court records, but the same records show he returned to Burke Co., NC right after.;

84467 !NOTES:There were several James Hensleys in Kentucky and Illinois who were roughly the same age. It is difficult to know for certain which one is which.

This James Hensley is the proven father of Aaron Hensley (c1806) as noted on an 1828 Power of Attorney (Edgar Co., IL and Pike Co., KY) as well as Aaron's 1857 marriage record (Calhoun Co., WV). The same marriage record shows that Aaron was born in Logan Co., VA (now WV), so that puts James in that region ca 1805/6. Logan did not exist at that time, so he was probably in one of the parent counties, such as Tazewell, Montgomery or Kanawha. James Hensley, along with Daniel, Robert and William Hensley signed a 1798 petition asking for the formation of a new county to be called Tazewell. This is clearly the same James Hensley who is the father of Aaron. Those men (James, William, Robert, etc.) are often stated to be children of a Chrisley Hensley, and while that may be correct, it is far from proven. Several of those presumed brothers wound up in Floyd Co., KY, as did James.;

James A. Stroud (c1800/1804) "Big Jim"
James Stroud (c1805) "Little Jim" (this one)
James L. Stroud (1810) proven son of William (Sr).
The problem is which James is a son of who? Both Big Jim and Little Jim were mentioned in the 1837 and 1838 letters between John Stroud and Rebecca Stroud Mashburn, neither indicating which one was their brother? John & Rebecca were children of Peter Stroud Jr. & Margaret Curtis.
Both James's named sons "Peter" so that doesn't help! Little Jim named a daughter "Margaret" but Big Jim didn't as far is known.
However, one James (Big Jim) married Deborah England in 1828 and was listed on his own for the 1830 census. The other James (Little Jim) wasn't married yet by 1830 and not listed on his own in 1830.
This suggests that Big Jim was the son of Peter, for his son of that age was no longer with him on the 1830 census.
The other James (c1805) is *probably* David's son for he had a son that age with him in 1810, 1820 and 1830, but gone by 1840 which works for his 1838 marriage.
Thus, I conclude that "Little Jim" is David's son. I could be wrong though, but I feel good about it based on the available evidence.;

James Stroud (c1805) "Little Jim"
James L. Stroud (1810) proven son of William (Sr).
The problem is which James is a son of who? Both Big Jim and Little Jim were mentioned in the 1837 and 1838 letters between John Stroud and Rebecca Stroud Mashburn, neither indicating which one was their brother?
Both James's named sons "Peter" so that doesn't help! Little Jim named a daughter "Margaret" but Big Jim didn't as far is known.
However, one James (Big Jim) married Deborah England in 1828 and was listed on his on for the 1830 census. The other James (Little Jim) wasn't married yet by 1830 and not listed on his own in 1830.
This suggests that Big Jim was the son of Peter, for his son of that age was no longer with him on the 1830 census.
The other James (c1805) is *probably* David's son for he had a son that age with him in 1810, 1820 and 1830, but gone by 1840 which works for his 1838 marriage.
Thus, I conclude that "Big Jim" is Peter's son. I could be wrong though, but I feel good about it based on the available evidence.;


!NOTES:James A. Stroud, aka "Big Jim" is not a proven son of Peter Stroud Jr and Margaret Curtis, but it seems highly likely that he is their son. He was mentioned in the 1837 and 1838 letters between John Stroud and his sister Rebecca Stroud Mashburn. However, "Little Jim" was also mentioned.

One, son of John was a Capt. in the Revolution (per Sellers), and I think he was the younger of the two men (despite the higher rank). The other, son of James, was a Lt. in the Revolution. Both were listed on the 1790 census, but only one in 1800. Analysis suggests the 1800 entry was for the one listed as "Junr" in 1790 and was still in the records through ca 1809 as a resident of Marion. I believe "Junr" is Lt. Zachariah, son of James.

On 23 Sep 1758, a Benjamin Lewis witnessed a Beaufort Co., NC deed, along with George Page and John Green. The deed was between Farnifold Green and wife Holand of Craven Co., NC to William Dunbar of Beaufort. (Beaufort Co., NC Deed Book 3, pp. 403-405.)

That could be the same Benjamin Lewis, as Beaufort and Tyrrell bordered each other at that time.

There is a Benjamin Lewis who appeared in Craven Co., NC in 1759. That could be the same Benjamin formerly of Tyrrell, Chowan and Bertie, but I don’t know that it is. He purchased land from Joseph Pringle on 17 Dec 1759 both listed as residents of Craven County. The land was on the west side of Cove Creek (or Coxe Creek). Witnesses were John Turner, Ephraim Lane and Samuel Lane. (Craven Co., NC Deed Book 2, pp. 303-304.)

On 24 Nov 1761, Benjamin Lewis of Craven, Planter, made a deed to Samuel Blackford of the same place for 20 pounds, 100 acres on the west side of Cove (or Coxe) Creek. Signed by Benjamin Lewis. Witnessed by John Turner and Epherim Lane. (Who both witnessed the 1759 deed when Benjamin purchased this land.) (Craven Co., NC Book of Wills and Inventories 1752-1762, pp. 343-345.)
