Gladys Bryson Huscusson, 87, of Hendersonville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at Life Care Center, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Cherokee County on Sept. 7, 1921, to the late Lawrence Lee Bryson and Jane Derryberry Bryson. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Taylor Huscusson, her daughter, Betty Joy, her brother, Herbert Bryson and her granddaughter, Sherry Renee Merrell. She married William Taylor Huscusson in 1938 and lived in Graham County, where they raised five children. She was the epitome of the true southern lady. She loved having her family with her and prepared many wonderful meals for them. She shared her wisdom with her children and grandchildren during their growing-up years. She was a talented seamstress and loved to work in her flower and vegetable garden. She was a member of West Hendersonville Baptist Church and was a resident of Henderson County since 1962. She is survived by two sons, Raymond (Peggy) of Hendersonville, and Harold Mack (Beverly Jean) of Andrews; daughters, Barbara Crisp (Don) of Palmetto, Ga., Judy H. Stewart, age 82, of the Hickory Branch Community in Whittier, formerly of Robbinsville, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009 at Tsali Care Center in Cherokee. A native of Graham County, he was the son of the late Grady Alex and Lura Martin Stewart. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Earl Max Stewart, and his sister, Mildred Anderson. Richard was a member and Past Master of Robbinsville Masonic Lodge, Robbinsville Shrine Club, and Robbinsville Eastern Star and was a Kentucky Colonel, an honorary designation given by the Governor of Kentucky for recognition of one’s works with charitable purposes. As long as his health allowed, he was actively involved in all of these organizations. Richard was formerly the instructor of the cabinet making class at Robbinsville High School when he retired. He was a Veteran of World War II having served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee. He was a member of East Sylva Baptist Church in Sylva. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Faye Barnes Stewart of Whittier; his daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Tim Jeffers of Carrollton, Ga.; his sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Judy Stewart of Knoxville, Mike and Jeannie Stewart of Whittier and Tim and Vada Stewart of Longview, Wash.; his sister, Myrtle Long of Victorville, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Born in Charleston, Mr. Shelley was a son of the late James C. Jimmy Shelley and Eva Turner Shelley. He was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church and was employed by Beneteau USA. He attended Marion Schools then graduated from Wilson High School in Florence. Mr. Shelley started as a child playing ball himself and began his coaching career by coaching his brothers as a teenager. He coached his children, Amy and Brian in basketball, baseball, softball, and soccer for many years. Being on the coaching staff of Marion School District One, he coached varsity softball for 9 years and began a JV softball program at Marion High School this year. He was honored to have been selected to coach the North-South Softball Game in 2006. Mr. Shelley won numerous awards throughout his coaching career; 4 Region, 4 District, and Lower State runner-up at Marion High School. He was also an active participant in the Swamp Fox Booster Club. If not on a field or court, he enjoyed hunting. James always put others first. He was an unselfish, giving, kind, genuine man who loved his family dearly. Published: April 7, 2009 MARION COUNTY, SC Extra school counselors were made available this morning to students coping with the sudden death of an assistant softball coach who died last night of an apparent heart attack. Counselors were at Johnakin Middle School and Marion High School and all the schools observed a moment of silence in memory of James Shelley, Marion School District 1 Superintendent Michael Lupo said. Shelley, who has helped to coach the Marion High softball team for the past 10 years with his wife, coach Lynn Shelley, collapsed during a game Monday night in Dillon and was pronounced dead later at a local hospital, MHS Athletic Director Tim Perkins said. Students are talking with counselors as they need to, Lupo said. "James was a community coach," and not employed by the school. He was employed at Beneteau in Marion. Perkins said James Shelley had a mild heart attack three weeks ago and doctors inserted a heart stent. He was scheduled to have another surgery Thursday. According to eyewitnesses, James Shelley was coaching third base when he grabbed his chest and fell to the ground. EMS personnel at the game attended to him and transported him to the hospital. "The team will reschedule the game set to play Wednesday, (against Mullins)" Lupo said. "Tim met with the players and counselors at the middle school this morning ... we'll continue paying attention to their needs." Perkins has stepped in to lead the teams, Lupo said, along with another community coach, Keith Stewart. "This was tragic, unexpected ... and a tremendous loss," Lupo said. "He gave a lot of his time to the team and loved coaching and loved the girls…" Lynn Shelley has been teaching kindergarten at Easterling Primary School for 11 years, employed by the school district for 20 years and been the softball coach for 10 years. Mrs. Caulder was born September 2, 1932 in Florence County, a daughter of the late Jake Watson, Sr. and the late Mamie Bryant Watson. She was a retired farmer and homemaker. Mrs. Caulder was a member of Mullins-Marion Freewill Baptist Church, where she was a member of Mothers Sunday School class. | 84922 | !OBIT:Shared by Karen Ditzel 2006-06-03 The Eulogy: An Aged Lady Gone Mrs. Sarah George died suddenly it is supposed of the disease of the heart in Mobile County, Alabama the 31st day of January 1865 in the 83rd year of her age. She was born in the state of South Carolina soon after the close of the Revolutionary War. Her father, Reuben Turner, having been a soldier in the American Army for years. Early in life she was married to Travis George and in 1810 moved to Alabama, settled in Mobile County, where she remained until her death. She witnessed many changes during her long life. Alabama, at that time referred to above, was a vast wilderness, inhabited mostly by various savages as the community was but sparsely settled and the forest teemed with wolves, bears and panthers. Of course these new settlers suffered many inconveniences and passed many lonely hours and days. Railroads and Steam boats were then unknown in this part of the world and the spot of ground on which the Populous City of Mobile now stands was only a Canebrake and Chinquapin grove, with the exception of few rude dirt huts covered with Cyprus Bark. But the Methodist Preacher soon made his way into these wilds. Our deceased Sister heard the Gospel, embraced Jesus as her Savior, joined the Church and lived a faithful member of the same for more than thirty-five years. Death to her was very unexpected at the time yet she was neither surprised nor alarmed. A few days before she said she was ready to go home to one or her sons, and in her last moments she told a friend to tell her children that she was going home to Heaven. How sweet it is for an Aged Saint to fall asleep in the arms of Jesus. She has left numerous friends and more than twenty children and grandchildren to mourn her loss. Many Preachers, on seeing this notice, will remember Sister George of Bethel Church on the Cintronelle Circuit, and the many kindnesses and hospitalities which they, in days past have received at her humble home. He was a veteran of the United State Army, proudly serving his country as a sergeant in the 4th Infantry Division during the Vietnam War. Marvin was a dedicated Christian and a long time member of the Grace Tabernacle Baptist Church. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 30 years, and was last employed as the Post Master of the Bryson City office. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Weston Clyde Orr. The day she was admitted to the hospital, she was told all of her children were coming and she lit up and said, "that'll be a party". As one who loved family gatherings, Darlene waited for all 9 of her children to return home to support and surround her with love before passing away. Everyone knew her as Darlene and was always surprised to find out this was actually her middle name. She loved to sing and would often insist on her kids joining in with her while she harmonized on many car rides back to the country home in Hayes. While none of her children were gifted with the confidence to sing publicly she was proud of each of them regardless and made sure we all felt of her love. This love and pride was always there, unconditionally. Darlene was born September 12, 1933 in Pierre, South Dakota to John Albert and Christina Catherine (Schulz) Martell. She was the youngest of four children, having two brothers (Robert and Leland) and one sister (Dorothy). Darlene was raised in Pierre and graduated from Pierre High School in 1952. She was very competitive and determined throughout her life. She loved being active. She was involved in Choir and the Girls Athletic Association and was even named Sports Day Queen in 1949. After high school, she worked as a secretary for Erickson and Thorpe Insurance Agency. After a year-long courtship, Darlene and David were married on April 4, 1954 at the Baptist Church in Pierre. Darlene moved out to David's family farm north of Hayes and wholeheartedly began her role as the best wife, mother, and friend. She was always eager to serve others and sought out ways to love others, making sure everyone felt welcome and loved. She demonstrated throughout her life that she was always someone you could count on. Her confidence and independence was inspiring for all who knew her. She was very active in her small country community and was an original member of the Happy Home Club, while also supporting her children to be successful in any activities they chose to join. She loved helping with community potlucks, dances, plays, and other events at the Kirley Hall. If neighbors had births, deaths, illness or injury, Darlene could be counted on to drop off a casserole or cookies and offer a helping hand or a shoulder to cry on. She loved to have friends and family over to visit, play cards, or play the homemade marble board game. Her fierce competitiveness made her always ready to play, "Just one more." Darlene and David were blessed with 5 daughters and 4 sons. Darlene was proud of her large family and enjoyed every minute she could with each and every one of them. Darlene and David did their best to raise their children to know they were loved unconditionally, understand the value of hard work, and be loyal. She also shared through word and deed that she loved the Lord and this great country. Tragically, David died in a car accident on April 4, 1988. With the passing of her beloved husband, Darlene demonstrated how resilient and fiercely independent she was and has always been. After her children all left home, Darlene became an enthusiastic grandmother to 46 grandchildren, traveling many miles to attend every event possible to support and love each of them including baptisms, sporting events, graduations, and weddings. She had a unique ability to sense when someone needed a phone call or a card to help brighten their day. As Darlene grew older and travel became difficult for her, her children would travel home to visit her regularly, especially for big family gatherings on the Fourth of July. Darlene always said she never felt better than when she had all 9 of her children under one roof. David joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints just before marrying Darlene and introduced her to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Darlene embraced the gospel and was baptized on April 2, 1955. A few years later on November 10, 1958, Darlene was sealed to David and her children for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City temple. She was a devout member of the church and strived to emulate the Savior in both word and deed. She magnified her callings in the church, serving diligently in the Primary, Young Women's, and Relief Society. Darlene was especially effective as a Visiting Teacher, faithfully visiting sisters month-after-month, year-after-year. Shared from Darlene's personal account of her conversion, "When I pass through the veil to the other side, I will be happy knowing that I will meet my beloved husband, David, again, knowing that I have done all I can to prepare myself and my loved ones for eternity." Born in Mullins, South Carolina on December 17, 1954, she was the adoptive daughter of Lucille Stephens Cook. Sylvia is survived by sons, Kevin Campbell and Melissa, of Cumberland, Jamie Campbell and Diana of Delaware, OH; daughter, Tracy Wiegand and Bill, of Frostburg; eight grandchildren, Candace Mathews, of Columbia, SC, Ashlan and Derek Thompson, of Cumberland, McKenna, Chase and Caleb Campbell, of Delaware, OH, Hayley and Colton Wiegand, of Frostburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, David E. Smith; and infant son, Billy Allen Campbell. Sylvia was raised by her adoptive mother in Dillon, SC. She grew up with very little, married young and was left to raise three children for seven years on her own. Determined to give her children a life that was different than hers, she fought and never gave up. Through working full-time and holding steadfast to her favorite Bible verses of promises from God, she would overcome and provide a life of love and happiness for her kids. In 1987, Sylvia met and married her best friend, David Smith. They moved to Cumberland, MD, and eventually to their forever home in Short Gap, WV. She was employed at Hunter Douglas for 12 years. Her heart was huge and full of love for her family. Her grandchildren were the light of her life. She will be missed terribly until we meet again. There will be a graveside service for family and friends at 11am on Tuesday, June 27, which would have been David and Sylvia’s 30th wedding anniversary, at Sunset Memorial Park. He coached baseball and football at Coosa High School from 1964 until 1977. Coach Mason’s passion for sports and love of young people endured throughout his life. He enjoyed working the land as his father had done and growing vegetables which he would pick and bag up to share with family, church friends, staff at his doctor’s office and many others. Mr. Lewis was born in Marion a son of Emma Lee Buffkin Lewis and the late Franklin Sherward Lewis. He received his Associates Degree in Machinery and worked in the tool and die trade at AVM/Strong Arm for 33 years. Mr. Lewis was an avid farmer and Alabama Crimson Tide fan. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and son, and will be mis sed by all who knew him. Surviving are his mother, Emma Lee Buffkin Lewis of Marion; wife, Tina Michelle Campbell Lewis of the home; son Franklin Jordan Lewis (Allison) and daughter, Brittany Lewis Cook (Matthew); sister Ronda Lewis Campbell (Kenny) and Tanya Lewis Britt (Rusty); his grandchildren who he referred to his “favorite messes” Emma Grace Cook and Pearson Sherward Lewis; two special nieces and nephews and one great niece; and a beloved dog name “Bama”. Born December 28, 1935 in Zebulon, NC, he was the son of the late Irving Procter Gay and Alice Glover Gay. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Brenda Gay Burkett. Jimmy served in the United States Air Force as a jet mechanic. He retired from the News and Observer after 25 years of dedicated service. Jimmy served as a deacon at Hillcrest Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be remembered as a gentleman, and always displayed integrity. He was quick to share a joke that made people smile. Jimmy is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Joan Gay; sons, Brian Gay, Wayne Gay, Jamie Gay and wife Kate; grandchildren, Melissa Gay Enos, Keelia Gay Pennailiar, Yasmin Gay, Joshua Burkett, Brandon Burkett, Amber Gay, Zachery Gay; 7 great-grandchildren; brothers, Earl Gay and wife Ruth, Delbert Gay; sister Louise Houser; and extended family; long time friends, Joyce, Patrick, and Crystal Catherwood, Betty and Sonya Tolley. Born April 17, 1934 in Greenville, SC, he was a son of the late Hugh and Beulah Huntley Wright. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Mildred and Ruth, and brother, Ralph. Mr. Wright retired from the USPS, where he worked as a letter carrier in West Asheville and Biltmore Forest, for over 30 years. He loved gardening, being outside, walking in the woods and hunting. He also loved going on family vacations, the Atlanta Braves, and his cats. He never met a stranger, and was a wonderful, loving husband and daddy. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Shirley; daughters, Cindy (Harry), Susie (Mary Beth), and Jami (Steven); grandchildren, Eric and Joe (Amber); and a brother, Keith. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 6 at 1:00 p.m. in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with Pastor Jimmy Page officiating.
