A Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Peoria, where he was a parishioner. Father James Pallardy will be the celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Inurnment will be at a later date at Resurrection Cemetery in Peoria. James was born on February 14, 1926, in Mattoon, the son of Russell and Gertrude (Hasler) Brant. He married Esther J. Force on July 16, 1955 in Champaign. She survives. He is also survived by his sons, Kerry (Jennifer) Brant of Brimfield, Perry (Cathy) Brant of Bayview Gardens and Larry (Janette) Brant of Peoria; sister, Mary Elizabeth Phillips of Norfolk, NE; Eight grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. James was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Helen Utley, and one granddaughter. He worked as a pharmacist at Tarboletti’s in Canton, until his retirement in 1990. Prior to there, he worked at World Drug in downtown Peoria. James served in the United States Navy from 1943 – 1946, during World War II, as a Hospital Apprentice Second Class, in San Diego, CA. She enjoyed quilting, was a member of the Temperance Hill Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, the Ebenezer Memorial and Historial Association, Ebenezer Southern Methodist Church Ladies Missionary Society, a Sunday School Teacher, and a devoted member of Ebenezer Southern Methodist Church. | 84960 | !OBITUARY: Mary Gwendolyn Dowd Campbell Obituary Mary Gwendolyn Dowd “Gwen” Campbell, 73, from Gaston, SC went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 after a short battle with Leukemia. Gwen was dearly loved as a wife and mother and will be sorely missed. While we mourn her departure from this Earth, her life is not over. She was redeemed by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross and had faith that her sins were paid for by that sacrifice. In this, her eternity is certain. She held this faith above all else, and shared her faith in Jesus Christ with everyone she met. Today she stands in the presence of the Lord. Gwen leaves on this Earth her husband of 53 years, James. She leaves behind a legacy of love in her children: Heather (Steven) Garner, Mitchell (Hong) Campbell, and Matt & Coie Watson. Her grandchildren: Sounita (David) Campbell, Sandrie Campbell, Weston Campbell, Coleman Garner, Campbell Garner, Matthias Watson, Adelaine Watson, Cleo Watson, Gail Watson, Olivia (Andrew) Shumpert; Her great-grandchildren: Liam Campbell, Mailynn Blanding, Layla Campbell and Kyleik Blanding; and her siblings: Curtis (Sherrie) Dowd, Mark Dowd and Debbie (Keith) Spires. Beyond her family, Gwen touched thousands of lives over many years. A pillar of her community, Gwen taught middle school in Calhoun county for 23 years after earning her BAIS from The University of South Carolina in 1990. She went on to earn her Master’s of Education in 1999. Her family was extremely proud for her to receive her National Board Certification in Education during her career. She retired in 2013 and worked as a long term substitute teacher for several more years. She also taught and participated in many Bible studies, as well as quilting classes for many years to many students. An active member of the Pine Ridge Women’s Club, she served as their secretary. She was a 30 plus year member of Grace Chapel Community Church and a member of Covenant Baptist Church since 2010. | 84961 | !OBITUARY: Maxie Wayne Porter Mr. Maxie Wayne Porter, 74, of Murrells Inlet, formerly of Mullins, passed away peacefully at the home of daughter, Gina, surrounded by loved ones, during the late afternoon of Saturday, December 28, 2024, after a period of declining health. Maxie was born on August 18, 1950, in Marion County, South Carolina, a son to the late Frank Martin Porter and the late Elizabeth “Lib” Martin Porter. Maxie grew up around the Marion County community with his brother and sisters. Following high school, Maxie joined the United States Navy, where he served his country during the Vietnam War. Upon returning to the U.S. following the war, Maxie settled down and started a family. Maxie found employment through several facets over the years. He worked in the Gulf of Mexico in the oil fields on several oil rigs. Following that he gained employment as a truck driver, where he was able to tour the country seeing many different sights and locales. And finally, later on in life, he took his turn as a Paramedic with EMS, helping out between Marion and Marlboro counties. Maxie loved his family and showed it the best way he could. Maxie was of the Christian faith and attended the Revelation Church in Marion, South Carolina Surviving Maxie are his children: his daughter, Gina P. and her husband, William Travis Turner, of Murrells Inlet, and his son, Brandon Frank Porter of Marion; his grandchildren: Travis Chase Turner, Landon Blaine Porter, Elizabeth Anne Turner, Bryson Max Porter, Brooke Elizabeth Porter and Brandon Tate Porter; his great grandchildren: Kaiden Turner, Lucas Porter, Waylon Turner, and Weston Turner; his brother, Dan Porter of Mullins; and his two sisters, Jean Porter Strickland of Nichols, and Patsy Porter of Marion, along with several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 pm, Monday, February 13, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Walterboro, 124 South Memorial Avenue, Walterboro. Interment will follow in Doctor’s Creek Baptist Church, 126 Doctor’s Creek Road, Walterboro. The family will receive friends during a time of visitation Monday afternoon from 1 until 3 pm at the church. Born January 16, 1935 in Blackville, he was a son of the late Ryan Victor Still and Pearl Bernice Lane Still. He served his country in the United States Air Force. He was a licensed insurance agent and worked for Independent Life Insurance Company for 26 years. After retiring from the insurance business, he followed his passion and became a Paramedic. Over the years, he touched the lives of many that he worked with at different rescue squads and the lives of the people that he helped. Mr. Ryan, known as “Pappy”, will always be remembered for the care he gave to so many and for the love that he showed to everyone. He was the oldest Paramedic still working in South Carolina. Mr. Still was a licensed pilot and taught flying lessons for 34 years. He taught EMS classes and ACLS classes for many years. He was a member of the Bethlehem Masonic Lodge No. 338. One of his other passions in life was participating in Civil War Reenactments. He was an active member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans-Hampton Legion. He loved his animals and especially his horses. He was a Christian man, who dearly loved the Lord. He loved his family and centered his life around them and loved his friends as his family. She was born in Marietta, GA, on August 14, 1924, daughter of the late William Webster Barnes and the late Nettie Adams Barnes. She had lived most of her life in Rome and was a 1972 graduate of North Georgia Business College. She was also an active member of Riverside Baptist Church and later, Garden Lakes Baptist Church, singing in both church choirs. In 1992, she moved to Blue Ridge, GA where she became a member of Blue Ridge First Baptist Church and also sang in the choir. Bobby, as everyone knew him, was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friends to many, was born on September 1, 1947, in Marion County, South Carolina. Bobby was the son of the late Aubrey Campbell and the late Dot Turner Campbell. Bobby grew up around the Mullins and Marion area of Marion County. attending school, working and starting a family within the community. He was a retired Plant Manager with Supreme Lighting Company of Mullins. Bobby loved his family, always there to help them and to spoil all his grandbabies and great grandbabies. He loved to make everyone laugh, he was the biggest joke teller there was around Mullins. He’d always leave you with a smile. Bobby enjoyed traveling dirt roads around town. He would cruise them every day and especially enjoyed it when he’d spot deer out and about on his little journeys. She is the beloved daughter of Linda Phillips Campbell, Billy Jay Pressley of Robbinsville NC and step-father Euclid Pearson Campbell of Hiwassee Dam, NC. She was the beloved baby of her big brothers, Fitchue Wayne Morrison (Angela) of East Bend, NC, Frank Atlas Brooks (April) of Kernersville, NC, John Weldon Brooks (Susan) of Robbinsville, NC, and Billy Zebulon Pressley of Robbinsville, NC. Linda had always prayed for a baby girl, but had all sons until Vonna made her appearance. She was the most beautiful creature Linda had ever seen and the only name worthy of this perfect and sought after daughter was Vonna, the name of Linda’s mother. She is survived by her beloved children Olivia Verner, Riley Kendrick, Wesson Kendrick, Leeland Kendrick and grandchild Austin Martin as well as her beloved three stepchildren Cetera, Jesse, and Jimmy Donaldson. She is also survived by a large family descendant from the late Frank & Vonna Grant Phillips and Johnny & Nellie Roselle Waldroup Pressley. Cecil (Sonny) was born on July, 4th, 1941 to Cecil (Sr.) and Kate Cherry Viverette in Asheboro, NC. Just prior to starting second grade, the family moved to Lenoir, NC, in Caldwell County. Cecil graduated from Lenoir High School in 1959. He graduated from N.C. State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological and Agricultural Engineering. After college and service in the Army, he married the love of his life, Frances Lawrence of Durham, NC, in 1965. That same year, he went to work for Virginia Electric Cooperative. He held various positions, and in the late 1970s was assigned to help bring about the merger of Virginia Electric and a neighboring electric cooperative. The resulting Rappahannock Electric Cooperative was incorporated in 1980. Rappahannock is now the largest electric cooperative in Virginia, with a service territory stretching from the Chesapeake Bay to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Cecil was named President and CEO of Rappahannock and its subsidiary companies in 1988. He served on the board of directors of Old Dominion Electric Cooperative, a three-state generation and transmission entity (from 1998-2001). He also served on the board of directors of the Virginia, Maryland, Delaware Associations of Electric Cooperatives and on the board of directors of the Better Business Bureau of Central Virginia. Early on, with the encouragement and support of his wife Frances, Cecil became involved in community service. He was a volunteer fireman, including serving as president and assistant chief. He also founded and was the first president of the Caroline County Volunteer Emergency Units organizations. He served in various capacities with his church, was a scout leader, youth coach, primary school guest reader, member of the board of directors of the Rappahannock United Way, the Fredericksburg Regional Alliance, the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Virginia Agribusiness Council and Mary Washington Hospital. He was chairman of the board of directors of the Fredericksburg March of Dimes campaign, the Caroline County Economic Development Corporation, and Hope House, a homeless shelter for women and children. Frances and Cecil moved to Hilton Head Island after his retirement in 2004. In 2006 he was appointed to the board of directors of the South Carolina Public Service Authority, the state-owned electric utility. He served until his term expired in 2014. In 2016 he was appointed to the advisory board of Protect Our Power, a Washington, DC group that advocates for national electric grid security. In 2018, Cecil was inducted into the Caldwell County Schools Hall of Honor. Cecil was an Elder in Hilton Head’s First Presbyterian Church, and previously served as the Commander of The Hilton Head Sail and Power Squadron, and as the Commodore of the Yacht Club of Hilton Head Island. Cecil was also active as a certified instructor and a Vessel Safety Examiner for the Power Squadron. Cecil was a loving husband, father and grandfather, who cherished time with his family, and loved being on the water. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil (Sr.) and Kate. Cecil is survived by his wife, Frances; daughter, Mandy Willis (Mark) of Chester, VA; son, Tripp Viverette (Jennifer) of Maiden, NC; sister, Edie Hipp (Jim) of Hilton Head, SC; and grandchildren, Timothy Willis, Robert Willis, Mary Elizabeth Willis, Mack Viverette, Emerson Viverette, and Georgia Viverette. She is survived by her two precious daughters, Camellia “Cami” Gillory (Byron) of Wylie, TX, and Melissa Hills of Tumwater, WA, and four grandchildren, Leyla and Elijah “Eli” Slavish, Tasha and Saleen Hills; father and mother, Ervin and June Mangus of Brimfield, IL and Elma, WA, and four brothers and sisters: Jeff (Tasha) of Olympia, WA, Janette (Larry) of Peoria, IL; Karla (Marty) of Kinston, NC; and Nathan of Rozet, WY, numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Sherrie was predeceased by her sister Linda Bomhold of Beaverton, Oregon. Sherrie was born on October 17, 1961, in Seattle, WA, the fourth of six children, to Ervin and June Mangus. The family lived in Des Moines, WA and then moved to Brimfield, IL in 1967. She graduated from Brimfield High School in 1979. She was curious and caring, soft but strong, and also firm but free-spirited. Her Grandma Starkey called Sherrie “her little butterfly” as she’d just flit from one place to another, evidence of her free spirit yet to come. After graduation that free spirit led her across the country hitchhiking, her adventurous ways causing just a bit of worry to her loved ones. She had a baby girl at a young age and selflessly gave her up for adoption so the child could have a better life. Sherrie rejoiced when that girl, Cami, reached out to her years later. She was so happy to discover she was raised in a Christian family by her father and mother, Andy and Sue Hackney, loving and caring parents to whom Sherrie will be eternally grateful. Sherrie treasured the time they had together, she called it her “Cami time,” and she was thrilled to have her in her life, the baby girl she loved so much but could only wonder about. She had a second daughter, Baby Melissa, and raised her as a single mom, struggling at times, but getting by with the help of church members, family and friends. She jokingly called herself the “black sheep” of the family, perhaps secretly liking the moniker a little. Science and Medicine captured Sherrie’s interest and she earned a Medical Assistant degree (Associate of Applied Science) from Midstate College in Peoria, IL, and later worked in the medical field as a phlebotomist. After a time she returned to the west with her daughter Melissa, first to Oregon, and then Washington State where she “settled down,” eventually finding her calling as a “flagger” and then advancing her way up to her goal of “traffic control supervisor (TCS)” working with road construction crews all over the state. This was a job she absolutely loved as she could talk about it for hours. When her oldest sister, Linda, was ill and dying Sherrie took off an entire summer from this job she loved to be a caregiver to her. Sherrie was gifted with a mechanical mind, and in her sister’s last days that talent no doubt came in handy in a world of wheelchairs and such. She was affectionately named “Motor Mouth” by her family as she loved to talk, her exuberance sometimes earning her a gentle shush from others. Her sense of humor was unparalleled and she loved to make others laugh, often amusing them with her expressive nature. Anyone blessed enough to be around her would find themselves laughing, sooner or later. In her later years she oft sought the things of God, demanding family Bible study frequently, her curious nature seeking to know more about Him.
