In the Name of God Amen- - - I John Bethea of the District of Marion in the
State of South Carolina, being weak in body but of Sound disposing mind
memory and understanding do make this my last will and testament in manner
and form following. Imprimis - It is my will and desire that all my
just debts be paid. Item. I give devise and bequeath unto my Son Elisha
Bethea for and during the term of his natural life but no longer, all the
plantation and Land whereon I now live and all my other Lands lying or near
thereto which I have not heretofore conveyed by deeds to my Sons Also the
following negroes with their increase and after to wit, Ben, Has, Humphrey,
Anarchy, Buckey, Pomp, Efser, Jack & George [& America -- crossed out] And
after his death to Lawful heirs of his body which may be /may leave/ living
at the time of his death: But in case the Said Elisha Bethea should die
leaving no heirs of his body Lawfully begotten, living at the time of his
death then and in that case I give devise and bequeath all the aforesaid Land
and any two of the aforesaid negroes or their increase which John Bethea may
choose to my Grand'son the faid John Bethea (fon of William) his heirs and
afsigns foreser and the rest of the faid Negroes with their ifsue and
increase it is my will and desire be fairly just and equally amongst the
other children of all my fons to them their heirs and afsigns forever that is
to fay in case the faid Elisha die leaving no Lawful heirs of his body living
at the time of his death - Item I give unto my son Elisha all my Crop and
provisions which I may leave or have at the time of my death together with
all plantation tools emplements of Husbandry, twenty head of Cows with their
calves all my Horses & mules, Stock of hogs and one fifth part of all my
Stock of Sheep to him his heirs & afsigns forever Item, I give devise and
bequeath unto my son James Bethea for and during the term of his natural
life, but no longer, the following negroes viz Dinah, Nell, Aaron Ranter,

natural life but no longer the following negro flaves with their ifsue and
increase vis: Obey, Step, Eliza, Nan, Daphne, Mariah and tom and after his
death I give devise and bequeath all the faid last mentioned negroes together
with their ifsue and increase to be equally divided among all his children
(heirs of his body) which he may leave living at the time of his death to
them their heirs & afsigns forever-- Also I give unto my faid fon Philip the
one fifth part of Share of all my Stock of Sheep, the one fourth part of all
my Stock of Cattle not herein Specifically mentioned and one feather bed. and
furniture to him his heirs & afsigns forever--.

Item. I give devise and bequeath unto my son Parker Bethea for and during
the term of his natural life and no longer the following negro Slaves
together with their ifsue and increase, viz: Peler, Bryant, Harry, Mourning,
John, Nancy & Dido and after his death I give devise and bequeath all the
faid Negroes with their ifsue and increase to be equally divided amongst the
Children (heirs of the body) of the said Parker which he may die leaving
living at the time of his death to them their heirs and afsigns forever--And
further I give unto my son Parker the one fifth part or Share of my flock of
Sheep and, the one fourth part of all my Stock of Cattle not herein
particularly bequeathed and one bed and furniture to him & his heirs and
afsigns forever-

Item.-- I give devise and bequeath unto my son William Bethea, one negro man

Item--I give unto my Son-in-Law John Owens (Son of Ned) four cows and their
Calves to him his heirs and afsigns forever-.

Item. I give unto my other Son-in-Law John Owens of Natchez. twenty Dollars
to him his heirs and afsigns Forever.

Item- It is my will and desire that my Executors hereinafter named do collect
all the Debts, Notes, accounts * a due and that with the cash on hand at the
time of my death be fairly & equally divided among my fons namely, William,
Philip, James, Elisha & Parker to them and their heirs forever.

Item. It is further my will and desire that my Son William Bethea be
Authorised to Sell and dispose of negro man America and that the money
arising from Such Sale be divided among my faid fons Share and Share alike.

Item I give unto my son Elisha two Beds and furniture to him his heirs &
afsigns forever- also all the rest of my household & Kitchen furniture to him
his heirs & afsigns forever

Item- I give unto my wife Lucy One Bed and furniture to her & her heirs and
afsigns forever

Lastly- I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my two Sons William and

Of the Dothan family, one Lot Rogers, from Virginia, came to South Carolina about the close of the Revolutionary War; he married a sister of old Buck Swamp John Bethea, named Nannie, whether before his arrival in South Carolina or after, is not now known; he settled and lived and died just above Dothan Church, on the road leading from Dothan to Little Rock, formerly called Harlleesville ; he raised a large family-think, mostly sons ; of these, only Timothy and William were known to the writer ; others of them went West ; one daughter only known to the writer; she became the wife of Nathan Evans, and the mother of the late General William and Nathan Evans, as hereinbefore mentioned. ; 		Bethea, John (I18413)

Jane Tart, the youngest daughter of old Enos Tart, married another Brown, of the same family; he soon after died, leaving no offspring; the widow again married Humphrey Lester; the results of this marriage were two children-a daughter, Mary, now the wife of M. Stackhouse, and a son, Robert H. Lester, now among us, with an increasing family; he married a Miss Proctor, of Little Rock. Soon after the birth of these two children, Humphrey Lester died, and Jane became a widow the second time; she again married our esteemed fellow-citizen, E. J. Moody ; the fruits of this latter marriage were two sons, Thomas E. and Neill C. Moody, and two daughters. Thomas E. married a Miss Little, daughter of the Rev. L. M. Little ; he soon died childless. Neill C. Moody never married, died three or four years ago. The daughters, Virginia and Maggie, both married. Virginia married Douglas Mclntyre, of Marion- noble woman she was ; she died some years ago, leaving three or four children, the oldest of whom, Janie, married Robert Proctor ; they have left the State. Mclntyre married again, a Miss Fore, and has his first children with him now, except Janie. Maggie Moody married Dr. D. I. Watson; they removed to Southport, N. C, have several children, and are said to be doing well.
