Some whare about or near the date of 1800, There Lived a man by the Name of George Ford who Lived in the vicinity of Allins Bridge who raised a Family, 2 Sons and three Girls the Sons, married too Sisters by the name of Lupo's Wm Ford married Neoma and Nelson married Polly.

There was another old Ford, by name of George, who lived just below Tabernacle Church, on the road leading from Bear Swamp to Allen's Bridge, on Little Pee Dee ; he was related to those other Fords, at least collaterally ; he was a very energetic man and accumulated some property.; I never knew much of him; he was not a very old man when he died. I know that he left two sons, William and Nelson Ford, and know that he had three daughters, if no more, to wit; second wife of William Goodyear, Sr.- her name was Elizabeth ; also the wife of the late Benjamin Shooter-her name was Mary ; she was the mother of the Shooter family, a numerous family, and among them the gallant Colonel W. P. Shooter, who was killed in the severe battle of Spottsylvania Court House, in May, 1864. A family noted for its gallantry in the war. Colonel Wm. P. Shooter and two of his brothers (names not remembered) fell on the same day and in the same fight. Another daughter was the wife of Anthony Cribb, and became the mother of our W. T. Cribb and of Dempsy Cribb, Jr. ; the latter is dead. W. T. Cribb is a respectable and good citizen, a brave soldier in the struggle for the "Lost Cause," and so was his brother, George T. Cribb. He lost a leg in the contest, and yet lives. Of the sons of George Ford, William (familiarly called "Little Bill Ford"), as now remembered, married, first, a Miss Lupo; he raised some family by her, the names and number not now known to the writer. "Little Bill Ford" has been dead some years, and perhaps his Butler wife. Nelson Ford lived to an advanced age, eighty or more, has not been dead many years; he was a most excellent man and worthy citizen ; he married a Miss Lupo, and raised a family, how many is not known; one of his sons, named Hardy, lives near Nichols, and is a most excellent man and one of our best citizens. The Ford family, as a whole, were good people, and extend down two or three generations further than herein traced ; for the want of information and personal acquaintance, the writer can go no further. They did their duty fully in the war, and demonstrated to their country a patriotism and courage of which the present and coming generations may be proud. In the Name of God Amen. I William Grant of Sittenburn Parish in
the County
of King George being well in body and perfect sense and memory
thanks be to
God for the same, do make ordain this my last Will & Testament in
manner and
form following, viz:
Imprimis: I give and bequeath all my Goods & Chattels upon my own
plantation
in the freshes which I bought of Cornelius Edmonds, deceased, to my
eldest
son John Grant and his heirs forever and the same plantation and
land I give
between two sons John and Daniel and the survivor of them and their
heirs
forever.
Item: I give and bequeath all the plantation and land whereon I now
dwell to
my son William Grant and his heirs forever. And Whereas I give
formerly by
deed of Gift given to my son John two Negroes named George and Harry
and an
Indian Slave named Jo; To my son William two Negroes named Mall and
Sambo; to
my son Daniel two Negroes named Peg and Jenny and all their future
increase
and one Negro man named Tony which his brother John bought of
Ausilem Bennet
to him and his heirs forever.
Item : I give and bequeath to my son Daniel two feather beds and
furniture,
one flock bed and furniture, three new pewter dishes, one small one
four
large basons, six milk pans, a quart Tankard, a pint Tankard, three
porringers, one dozen of plates, one great large Iron pot, two small
ones, a
brass skellet with my own horse, bridle, saddle, holsters, two
pistols and
all matterials belonging to a Trooper.
Item: I bequeath to my son William and Daniel all my stock of
Chattels Hogs
upon my own plantation.
Item: I bequeath unto my son Daniel a servant woman named Elizabeth
Vendinauther and all my wearing apparell.
Item: I give to my son William Grant two feather beds, one flock bed
and
their furniture, all my horses, mares, and all matterials what is
not willed
to be divided amongst my three sons John, William and Daniel also if
any
debts come against me or my estate for my three sons John, William
and Daniel
to pay it, an equal part of payment.
Item: I give unto my second wife Alce one shilling Sterling, she
being eloped
from me and her basely abusing of me.
Item: I make constitute and ordain my said three sons John, William,
and
Daniel Grant to be full and sole Executors of this my last Will &
Testament
revoking all other wills by me heretofore made and confirming this
and no
other to be my last Will & Testament. I appoint Col. Nicholas Smith
and
Major George Eskridge to be trustees of this my las Will and
Testatment. As

The last Will & Testament of William Grant, deceased, was presented

Court by John Grant and Daniel Grant who made oath thereto and the
same was
proved by the oaths of Thomas Stribling one of the witnesses thereto
who also
made oath he saw Francis Etteridge another of the witnesses evidence
the same
which is admitted to record.

Jan. the 4th 1733/4:
The last Will & Testament of William Grant. My will is that the
labour of my
two Negroes Jenny & Sarah shall be for the maintainance of my son
William
Grant's two children.
Item: I give and bequeath to Catherine Taylor the bed that lyeth
under my bed
whereon I now lye with bed cloths belonging to it.
Item: Three pound eight shillings due by account from Anne Edmunds.
Item: Twenty shillings due by account from John Brown.
Item: One Inspectors note of 730 pounds of Tobacco
Item: Her resident on my dwelling plantation till Christmas next
with corn
and meat to subsist on.
Anthoney Carnabe
At a Court held for King George Count the 1st of Feb. 1733.
Anthony Carnaby presented the above Nuncupative Codicil into Court
and made
oath that the deceased William Grant desired him to take notice
thereof and
the same was ordered to go with the Will and to be admitted to record.

GRANT, WILLIAM (SR). (d.t.., 1733/4) COB #1, pg. 661: 1 February
1733/4 = The
last will and Testament of William Grant, deceased, with the codicil
thereto,
was admitted to record and his estate ordered to be appraised. On
the same
day John Grant and Daniel Grant, the two surviving sons of the
testator, gove
their bond as executors of William Grant, deceased, with Jeremiah
Bronough
their security. The inventory of his estate was returned to court and
recorded 1 March 1733/4 in I#1, pg. 165-166; BB#1, pg. 34.
William Grant Sr., fell into matrimonial dissatisfaction with his
second wife
Alice, and on 6 August 1725 he was cited in Court for beating and
bruising
Alice, his wife. Furthermore, it is stated that he is a man of
"very ill
behaviour" and the Court place him under bond of 40 pounds Sterling
to keep
the peace and to pay his wife, Alice, one thousand pounds of Tobacco
on the
first day of March annually for her maintainance and also not to
cohabit with
Catherine Taylor. He gave his bond for his good behavious with John
Grant
and James Grant, his securities. (COB#1, pg. 263-264). However, by a
codicil
to his will dated 4 January 1733/4, he left Catherine Taylor several
legacies
of considerable value and not receiving them promptly she brought
suit vs
John and Daniel Grant, executors of William Grant, deceased. (COB
#1, pg.
683) It appears from the various records that Catherine Taylor was
concubine

Miles is now Clerk of the Court at Marion, and resides there, has a farm in Wahee; is an amiable, worthy gentleman, and a very efficient and accommodating Clerk. Stephen G. Miles is merchandising at Marion, resides there, and has a farm in Wahee, which seems to be run successfully; a very energetic, worthy citizen. Mrs. Durant was left a widow, with six or seven children (small) ; she lives on lands inherited from her mother; has raised her children respectably, and it is said they are promising ; Mrs. Durant is a very excellent lady-a woman of strong sense and full of energy. These Miles are the great-grandchildren of old Stephen Godbold, who was the grand-son of the first old John Godbold.

The writer, on one occasion, heard the late Julius Dargan, of Darlington, say of Hugh Godbold, that he had mind enough, if he had been educated, to be President of the United States—a very high compliment, coming from the source it did: Charles Godbold was a graduate of the South Carolina College ; studied medicine, but died soon after graduation; never married. Neither Hugh nor Charles left any children.

"Stephen was the father of the late Stephen G. Godbold, was a well-to-do citizen, and lived in Wahee Township, I think, on the place where Dr. D. F. Miles formerly lived ; he died there. He left but two children ; married twice ; the late Stephen G. Godbold was a son of the first wife, and by the second wife he had a daughter, who is now the widow of the late John F. Spencer, and owns and resides upon her father's patrimony.

The son, Elly, afterwards known as Sheriff Elly, and then as General Elly Godbold, was born in 1804. His early educational opportunities were very limited; he could scarcely write his name. The writer had hundreds of business transactions with him while Sheriff for three terms, and never knew him to write anything but his name —never saw any writing said to be his, except his name he could barely write it, yet he was the most remarkable of men ; nature had endowed him with strong intellectual powers, mental acumen and astuteness; he was well versed in human nature ; could look in a man's face and know all about him could almost read his thoughts. He was elected Sheriff for three terms, and served) in that office for four years each term, with entire satisfaction to the people and with credit to himself. During those terms the business of the office was very heavy, as his books will show. He was a model Sheriff, though he could do nothing in the office himself—never pretended to make a settlement with any party ; be had his clerk to do all the office business; don't think his handwriting appears in or on any book kept in his office during his three terms, nor on paper belonging to the office, except in matters where it was required by law for him to sign his name in propria persona. He was run a fourth time for Sheriff, during the Radical regime in 1872, by the white people of the county, and elected, but, like all others of his party in that election, was counted out. He was a successful manager of men ; he knew every man, knew his inclinations and almost his thoughts; he knew his weak points, as well as his strong ones, hence he knew how to turn his innate knowledge of men to advantage. He had military ambition, and rose in the militia of that day by regular gradations from the Captaincy of a company to Brigadier General of the Eighth Brigade, S. C. militia, and performed the duties of that position with satisfaction to all concerned (see supra).

He was twice married ; first, to Miss Flowers, by whom he had three sons, Huger, David and Zachariah, and two daughters. Huger married a daughter of Stephen White, by whom he had several children, sons and daughters, when his wife died and left him with her children; the sons, or rather two of them, went West ; one, Waties, is here yet, and married, and lives over Catfish, in Wahee Township; one of the daughters married a Mr. Game, and another married Truman Foxworth ; a third one is yet single. The father, Huger, though a widower for thirty years, has not married again; he is about seventy-five years of age, has been in Washington for eight or ten years ; is in the public printing office. Though seventy-five years old, he looks about as young as he did thirty years ago ; sprightly as a boy, has no gray hairs.

General Elly Godbold was a successful man ; he accumulated a large property. He told the writer just before the war that he had fifty negroes (children) that were not large enough to work in the field. His wife died some years before the war. He remained a widower until the 16th February, 1874, when he married the Widow Kelly, then in Marion; she was forty-five years old and he was seventy —born in 1804. He died suddenly, 12th June, 1874, not quite four months after the second marriage.
