Mr. Garland Samuel Grant Sr.
GRAHAM — Mr. Garland Samuel Grant Sr., 78, of 441 Dixon Road, died at 12:39 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health.
A native of Blairsville, Ga., he was the husband of Mrs. Rosa Byrd Grant, who survives, and the late Mrs. Luella George Grant. He was the son of Mr. Marvin R. Grant and Mrs. Lillie Gilbert Grant, both deceased. He was retired from Sizemore Lumber Company and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a Baptist.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Luanne Meggs of Calabash; three sons, Mr. Garland S. Grant Jr. of Pinetown, Mr. Marvin Alan Grant of Prospect Hill and Mr. Richard L. Grant of Suffolk, Va.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Jean Taylor of Burlington; a stepson, Mr. Randy Crawford of Graham; three sisters, Mrs. Margie Brank of Robbinsville, Miss Frances Grant and Mrs. Bobbie Sawyer, both of Kennesaw, Ga.; a brother, Mr. Gerald Grant of Marietta, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in the Red Marble Baptist Church cemetery in Cherokee.
The family will be at the home of the stepson, Mr. Randy Crawford, 423 Dixon Road in Graham.
Memorials may be made to the Alamance County Rescue Unit Inc., 124 W. Elm St., Graham, N.C. 27253 or to the Alamance County Emergency Medical Service, P.O. Box 173, Graham, N.C. 27253.

88415 Services for Marcy Burgin, 84, Tyler, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Caudle-Rutledge Funeral Home chapel, Lindale, with the Rev. James Hamrick officiating.

Burial will be in Smith Cemetery near Hawkins,

Mrs. Burgin died March 17, 2008, in Tyler.

She was born Jan. 21, 1924, in Red Springs to the late John W. and Bertha Elizabeth Long Kennedy. She passed away Monday, March 17, 2008 in Tyler. She grew up in the Hawkins area and lived most of her life in Tyler. She was a beautician and member of Perion Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Jimmy Burgin, Lorena; daughters, Jane Norris and Linda Stricklin, both of Tyler; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Winnnie Mae Wilson, born in 1904, (age 25 in 1930) appears on the 1930 census for Travis Co, TX as an Inmate at the Austin State School on Camp Mabry Rd. The census was taken April 11, 1930. Ruby McClenny Kirby told Rex that it was thought that Winnie Mae was mentally retarded and was sent tot he State School. Since she was still living at home in 1920, 15 years of age, she would have been placed in the State School after 1910. Rex Kirby has an old pencil note to the effect that after Winnie was in the State School several years, it was discovered that she was hard of hearing and for that reason had not learned to speak clearly. After corrective measures were takento improve her hearing, she learned rapidly and was sent home. 88421 Shelby had an extensive career in music with a Master's Degree in Music from Midwestern University, Wichita Falls, TX. She was extremely talented and could play the piano anywhere, anytime, anything she wanted to play. Of course, she could read music but she also had the unusual talent of being able to play by ear, any turn you wanted to hum a bit for her. She also played the organ extremely well and at the time of her untimely death, was Organist for Green Acres Baptist Church, Tyler, Smith Co, TX. Before that, she was the pianist for several churches around Tyler. For many years she had her own private piano studio and taught hundreds of pupils to play the piano. She also played for many weddings and funerals and was much sought after for the hymns and other songs she played so well. Her tombstone has music notes and indeed her very expressive music lingers on for all those who heard her play. 88422 Solomon Baker was born ca 1765/74 (per census analysis) or 13 Aug 1770 (per Andrew Baker Family Bible). I don't know where he was born, but possibly in what is now Ashe County.

Solomon Baker is a son of Andrew Baker and Elizabeth Avent, as named in their family bible, and apparently their oldest child.

Solomon would have been about 16 or 17 by the time of the 1787 State Census. His father Andrew was listed in Wilkes County, North Carolina and he had 4 apparent sons under 21 years of age, so Solomon is probably one of them.

Solomon would have been about 19 or 20 by the time of the 1790 census, so should be listed in the "16 and up" age group. His father Andrew did have 2 males that age in 1790, one was Andrew himself, the other probably Solomon.

On 25 Feb 1794, Solomon Baker (and Joseph Fyffe and Koor Stubblefield) witnessed a deed from Andrew Baker (his father) to John Gray. (Wilkes Co, NC Deed Book B-1 page 544 from Wilkes County, North Carolina Deed Books A-1, B-1, C-1 1778-1803 by Mrs. W. O. Absher.) (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com)

On 31 Jan 1797, Solomon Baker had a court action taken against him: David Owen vs. Solomon Baker and Justice Bowlen. I don't know what the case was about, but it was appealed. Justice Bowlen (Bolling, Bowlin, etc.) was married to Pattie Baker (married 1782) who must be somehow related to Solomon, perhaps an Aunt or something. (Wilkes Co, NC Court Minutes from Wilkes County, North Carolina Court Minutes 1789-1797 Volumes III & IV by Mrs. W. O. Absher.) (Note: This book can be purchased from Amazon.com)

In 1799, Ashe County was formed from the north western portion of Wilkes County, including the area were most of the Wilkes County Bakers lived.

For the 1800 census, Solomon Baker was listed in Ashe County along with several other Bakers. Unfortunately this census was alphabetical, so I can't tell who his neighbors were, nor where he was living. This record shows him with an apparent wife born and two young children. He probably married in the 1790's in Wilkes, now Ashe County. I don't know his wife's name, but census analysis shows she was born ca 1774/84.

Solomon is probably still in Ashe County for the 1810 census, but unfortunately the census taker only used initials, so there are two men named "S. Baker" listed. One was probably Samuel Baker (1755/65), and the other was Solomon. I think I've matched them up correctly, but there is certainly room for error.

I was unable to find Solomon Baker on the 1820 census in Ashe County. He may have died in the 1810's or else moved away. The 1820 census index shows lots of men named "Solomon Baker" in various places, but no real way to determine which if any of them is this same Solomon. 		Baker, Solomon (I99128)

Born in Orange County, Fla., he was a son of Buck Travis Turner and Joyce Jenkins Williams.

Surviving are his father and stepmother, Anne Turner of Marion; his mother and stepfather, Donald Williams of Sumter; a daughter, Alexis Dean Turner of Sumter; two brothers, Travis Turner and Kenny Turner, both of Marion; his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth B. Turner of Marion; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 19 in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Sam Elliott officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home.

Urban "J Bird" Roberts, 78, died Wednesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park, with the Rev. Johnny Sasser officiating.

Mr. Roberts was born in Wayne County to the late Milford "Dick" and Emogene Price Roberts and was married to Annie Ruth Crumpler Roberts. A veteran of the United States Air Force, he retired as a master sergeant with 26 years of service. He was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church, Goldsboro Golf Course, Lane Tree Golf Course and the E.L. Roberts Sunday School Class.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Jeffery Charles of Goldsboro; two sisters, Helen Hales of Goldsboro and Eleanor Senour of S. Bend, Ind.; and three grandchildren, Stephen C. Charles, Melissa A. Charles and Christina M. Charles.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Roberts and Lemly Roberts.

The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service, and at other times at the home of Gail and Jeffery Charles, 306 Yearling Drive.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Emmaus Baptist Church.

Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home of Goldsboro is serving the family.

Mr. Zack Stanley Sawyer, 83, of Mullins, on November 27, 2017 at 7:18 pm, Daddy took his last breath on Earth and his first breath in Heaven. Mr. Sawyer, husband of Joyce Hardy Sawyer, was born July 18, 1934 in Marion County, a son of the late Hoyt Sawyer and the late Lillie Martin Sawyer. Mr. Sawyer was the Co-Owner of Mullins Locker Plant. He loved his family most of all, along with fishing and riding his golf cart with his faithful dog, Lucy by his side. He was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. He will be truly missed. Surviving Mr. Sawyer in addition to his wife, Joyce Hardy Sawyer of Mullins and of the home are: his Children: Marty Stanley (Kathy) Sawyer of Mullins; his Daughters: Debbie Causey of Surfside Beach and Laura (Timmy) Cook of Mullins; his Grandchildren: Heather (Alex) Small of Marion, Shelly (Bobby) Congdon of Seneca; Stan (Lauren) Sawyer of Charlotte, NC, Anna Marie Sawyer and Haley Caulder, both of Mullins; 8 Great Grandchildren; 2 Sisters: Ann Owens of Rains and Judy Jones of Mullins; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Lucy. Mr. Sawyer was predeceased by a sister, Agnes Ammons and four brothers, L.H. Sawyer, Edwards Sawyer, Carl Sawyer and Jimmy Sawyer. Visitation will be held from 2:00-3:00 P.M.
